Abstract

1,069,645. Projectiles. BOFORS A.B. Nov. 11, 1963 [Nov. 12, 1962], No. 44484/63. Heading F3A. A projectile has a protective cap which is released after a material holding it in place is shattered on entry of the projectile into water from air. A housing (5) is screwed to the forward part of an anti-submarine rocket (1) and carries a cone-shaped housing (7) made of brittle plastics for shattering. Within the housing (7) the rear edges of two halves (8a, 8b) of a protective cap engage a ring (6), with pins (29) in the halves engaging holes in a sleeve (12) to prevent the halves separating until the sleeve has moved forward of the ring (6), such forward movement being prevented while releasable catches (9) are retained by the housing (7). A transducer (10) surrounded by a rubber capsule (11) transmits pulses into the water for a proximity fuze after removal of the halves (8a, 8b). The transducer (10), capsule (11) and ports (12-16) are movable in a forward axial direction by a spring (24) and an oil dashpot system. On impact with the water the ring- shaped housing (7) is shattered and catches (9) released. The initial dynamic pressure of the water on the cap halves (8a, 8b) prevents these being moved forward with the transducer (10) by the spring (24) and they remain in position with the rear edges still held by the ring (6) until the water pressure has decreased and flow conditions around the front part of the rocket become stabilized, when the spring (24) will move the parts forward and the cap halves be released.
