Abstract
842,654. Regulating liquid levels. BARTON, M. July 21, 1958 [May 16, 1957], No. 15498/57. Addition to 750,870. Class 123(1) The apparatus for maintaining a constant level of oil in the crankcase of an I.C. engine described in the parent Specification is modified in that a cut-off valve 1 is connected in the oil supply pipe 2 between the oil container 3 and the crankcase 5, the valve being adapted to close as soon as the engine starts and to open when it stops so that oil is not fed to the crankcase whilst the engine is running when turbulence in the crankcase would affect the efficient operation of the apparatus. In the form shown the valve consists of a piston 6 having a through-bore 10 connecting the parts of the pipe 2 whilst the piston is in the end position shown. When the engine is started suction in the inlet manifold is communicated to the piston through a pipe 12 to move it against the action of a return spring 11 and so to cut off the oil supply. In a modification, the piston is withdrawn by a solenoid which is energised only whilst the engine is running.
