Abstract
842,026. Reciprocating generators. BRAILSFORD, F., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd. June 16, 1958 [June 20, 1957], No. 19516/57. Class 35. Heavy current impulses, e.g. for nuclear discharges, welding, or arc discharges, are generated in a coil A attached to the skirt of a piston P which is thrust into the radial field between the poles B of an electromagnet by the injection of steam or compressed air into the cylinder C. It is arranged by suitable mechanism, e.g. a cam-shaft, controlling inlet and exhaust valves D, E, that the piston is accelerated over distance x 1 , and valve D is closed and exhaust valve E is opened. The coil now enters the magnetic field, the resultant induced current producing a damped oscillation having a first swing to x. At this point the recoil may be damped by the admission of further steam at valve D for a brief period, thus bringing the piston to rest without permitting reversal of current. Contacts operated by the piston may be used to apply a resistive load to the generator in the event of the normal load failing. Compensating coils carrying the load current may be secured to the pole-faces. The piston may be returned to its starting position by means of an auxiliary piston connected through a piston-rod. The moving coil is connected through suitable sliding contacts to the outside circuit. The moving coil may be of strip wound on edge or of hollow circular crosssection, and the turns may be axially spaced to reduce inductance. Specification 830,252 is referred to.
