Abstract
877,601. Impulse generators. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. March 28, 1960 [March 28, 1959], No. 10956/60. Class 35. The current pulse of a D.C. impulse generator is initiated by the opening of a D.C. excitation circuit and controlled in magnitude and duration by the rate at which an air gap in the magnetic circuit is lengthened. The magnetic circuit comprises a fixed part 8, and a movable part 7 attached to pistons 9, 10, 11 by which the air gap may be varied, using hydraulic or pneumatic means controlled by a valve 18. As shown, the two cores 7, 8 have series connected coils 5 which are connected first to a D.C. source 1, to magnetize the cores (with the gap at a minimum) to saturation, and then to a load 2 and series resistor 4. At the instant of change-over the part 7 begins its opening movement. In an alternative construction (Fig. 2, not shown), separate windings, disposed around the air gaps, are provided for excitation and the load; the load windings may comprise several coils arranged for series or parallel connection to match varying applications. The pulse is terminated (in both constructions) by reversing the movement of part 7, when any surplus energy may be recovered by using the pistons to recompress the working fluid, and by supplying electrical energy to the excitation source.
