[Also in Divisions H1 and H2] An arrangement for diverting the magnetic flux of a magnet through one or other of two or more magnetic circuit paths comprises auxiliary magnet means included in at least one of said paths, and generating a controllable auxiliary magnetomotive force to produce a control flux through said one path which controls the distribution of the flux produced by the main magnet as between said magnetic circuit paths. Permanent magnet 1, Fig. 1 is provided with two magnetic circuit paths 2, 3, 4 and 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> respectively, part of the former path being surrounded by an electromagnet winding 5. If winding 5 is momentarily energized in such a magnitude and sense as to aid the magnetic flux passing through it from the magnet 1 and cancel out the flux in the path 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> then upon cessation of the energization the flux from magnet 1 will continue to flow through the path 2, 3, 4 rather than the path 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP>. If, on the other hand, winding 5 is momentarily energized, so that the flux in path 2, 3, 4 is cancelled out and that in path 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> increased, then upon cessation of the energization the flux from magnet 1 will continue to flow through path 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> rather than the path 2, 3, 4. Magnet 1 may be an electromagnet, while the circuit element 3 may alternatively comprise a permanent magnet, the flux switching being performed by its movement in or out of circuit or by the removal of its magnetism by heating. The arrangement may be applied to a magnetic latching arrangement in which the movement of latch member 3, Fig. 3, is controlled by momentary currents passed through windings 5 on the limbs 2, 4. The latch member 3 is permanently biased to the open position by means of a weak spring 6. The arrangement may also be applied to a magnetic work table (see Divisions H1 and H2).
