Abstract

958,235. Inductors. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Oct. 30, 1961 [Dec. 9, 1960], No. 42425/60. Heading H1T. [Also in Division H3] A switching device includes a closed loop magnetic core L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , L 4 with a winding W 1 , W 2 whose inductance is switched between relatively high and low values in dependence on the relative directions of magnetization of the magnets M and EM which are arranged as shown. The electromagnet EM has a high remanence, so that its direction of magnetization depends on the sense of the last signal in the D.C. control winding W 3 . The permanent magnet M has its flux adjusted by the air gaps g to be equal to that of the electromagnet. The geometry is preferably such that the flux from one of the magnets, if the other were absent, would divide in the ratio 3 : 1 between its two possible paths. If EM is magnetized so that P 3 is south and P 4 north, then limbs L 3 and L 4 are saturated. Windings W 1 , W 2 then have a low inductance. If EM is reversed then the fluxes are in limbs W 1 , W 2 and are of about half the previous value. If this is below the saturation flux the windings W 1 , W 2 will possess a relatively high inductance. The arrangement may be used in railway signalling systems where it is essential that, after a period of supply failure, the switch responds to the last control signal received.
