Abstract

[Also in Divisions H1 and H2] An electromagnetic actuator comprises a fixed primary coil, a movable secondary coil inductively linked to the primary coil, and an actuating element having a conductive portion inductively linked to the secondary coil so that when the primary coil is energized the actuating element is repelled with respect to the secondary coil, means being provided to damp the movement of the secondary coil. As shown, Fig. 1, a recoilless electromagnetic hammer comprises a primary coil 11 wound in a helical groove 31 in a conductive support 12, which has a gap or slit so that it does not act as a shorted turn, and secured in a easing 21 by means of an epoxy liner 32. A secondary coil 13 in the form of a conductive hollow cylinder having a longitudinal slit 36 lies within the primary coil 11, and its rear end engages a recess in an insulating disc 14 on which operates a return spring 46 and a dashpot 18. The front end of the secondary coil is provided with a layer 42 of insulating material. The actuating element (hammer) 16 is mounted in front of the secondary coil and carries a conductive portion 17 in the form of a closed ring. The primary coil is connected to a power supply via a trigger 35 mounted in handle 27 and flexible conduits may also extend through cable 33 to supply coolant to the liner 32. In operation a pulse of current is applied to the primary coil, e.g. by discharge of a capacitor bank, the resulting magnetic field linking the primary and secondary coils resulting in a secondary current the field due to which induces a current in the conductive portion 17 of the actuating element. The actuating element and the secondary coil repel one another, the movement of the secondary coil being damped by a dashpot 18. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the primary coil is positioned within the secondary coil and the dashpot may be omitted. The actuator may also be applied to the operation of valves and switches.
