Abstract
953,476. Electromagnets. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 14, 1963 [Feb. 23, 1962], No. 7206/62. Heading H1P. [Also in Division F2] A valve piston 1 (see Division F2) biased by a spring 13 or compressed air and held against rotation by splines, keys &c. (not shown), is operated in less than a millisecond after the application of an electric signal to a coil 10 embedded in a synthetic resin, e.g. of the epoxy kind, by the repulsive force induced in an eddy current armature 11 of aluminium. The coil is energized by a capacitor 25 charged by means (not shown) and controlled by a switch 24. Means may be provided to latch the valve in one of its end positions or to move it out of its operated position either after a fixed period or at an instant determined by an electrical, mechanical or fluid-pressure control, or the valve may be operated in each direction by a separate eddy current device. One end of the coil is electrically connected to the housing 8 and the other to a terminal rod 14 passing through insulators 18, 19, 20 and terminating in a metal cap 21.
