Abstract

867,814. Electromagnets. DUBOIS, R. C., and SCARPA, F. June 23,1959 [June 24, 1958], No. 21550/59. Class 35. An alternating current electromagnet for operating a valve has a fixed magnetic core 2 cooperating with a movable armature 4 which comprises slotted plates 11 held in a flange 8 of aluminium or bronze by the casting, in the channels formed by the slots, of bars of the same metals to form with the flange shading rings to provide a substantially constant magnetic field. Upon energization of the electromagnet, the armature moves down against spring 6. The bars and flange may be cast in one operation. A cylindrical neck 9 on the armature holds a rubber shock absorber 16 to which is attached the valve control rod 7, pressure being exerted on the absorber via thrust member 18 from a regulating screw 19. A manual actuating device comprises a knob 25 fixed to a casing 24 which slides in bore 23a in a sleeve 23 screwed into cover 5 surrounding the armature. In the unenergized condition of the electromagnet a rod 27 connected by screw 19 to the armature is at the top of sleeve 23 and when knob 25 is depressed a spring-loaded ring 30 is carried down by casing 24 until it latches under a shoulder at the lower end of bore 23a (Fig. 5, not shown). Adjustments to the mechanism allow an air gap to be left between armature 4 and magnetic core 2. Restoration of current causes the armature to pull the rod 27 downwards, a truncated part 29 moving the ring 30 sideways to release it back into bore 23a.
