Abstract

840,439. Electromagnetically actuated valves. DUBOIS, R. C. July 22, 1957 [July 23, 1956; Feb. 12, 1957], No. 23085/57. Class 135. A valve having at least one closure member 2a operated by an electromagnet and integral with two pistons 3, 4, the force of fluid pressures on the inner faces of which substantially balances that on each side of the valve member, is characterized by a spring 9 holding the valve member, when the electromagnet is not excited, in a first position (shown) and, when the electromagnet is excited, to the supplementary action of a counter-pressure spring 11 which maintains the valve member in a second position. In Fig. 1 the armature 7 of the electromagnet is slidably mounted on the control rod 2 of the valve member and carries a yoke 10 which holds the counter pressure spring 11 against a boss 14 on the end of the control rod; when the armature is attracted to the magnet the movement of the armature, being greater than the movement of the valve member between its operative positions, causes the spring 11 to contract and overcome the action of spring 9 to move the valve member to its second operative position. In Fig. 5 two valve members are arranged to close in series and are actuated through a rocking lever 20 and control rod 2 by an armature 23 slidable within the electromagnet. The tension of the spring 11 may be adjusted by means of a screwed plug 28. The valve member may be adjusted to positions intermediate its extreme positions by varying the electromagnet current. In addition an electromagnet may be provided at each end of the valve member and locking means may be provided to hold the valve member in an operative position when the current is cut off.
