A discharge tube comprises a tubular anode 3 into which extend a pair of support rods 10, 11 of unequal lengths, between the ends of which is secured the cathode filament 15; attached to the shorter rod 11 is a rod 16, disposed on the opposite side of the cathode from rod 10. Rod 16 acts as a shield between anode and cathode, to prevent the latter from being bowed outwards by the electrostatic field. The device shown is a diode rectifier intended for high-voltage work.
