Abstract

A compound, of average particle size less than 50 millimicrons, and consisting of 60-85%SiO2, 2-30% Al2O3, 1-5% Na2O, and 10-15%H2O (see Group III) is suitable for use as a filler for rubbers. In an example, the following mixture was vulcanised at 141 DEG C.:- .Rubber (smoked sheet).100 parts by weight .Vulcafor HBS (R.T.M.).1,5 parts by weight .The compound as above.34,2 parts by weight .Stearic acid.3,0 parts by weight .Zinc oxide.5,0 parts by weight .Sulphur.2,5 parts by weight and exhibited the following properties:- .Tensile strength.216 Kg./cm.2 .Elongation at break.691% .Modulus : 300%.48 Kg./cm.2 .Hardness.60 B.S. degrees .Tear strength.125 Kg./cm.2ALSO:A compound referred to as sodium aluminium silicate, containing 60-85% SiO2, 2-30% Al2O3, 1-5% Na2O, and 10-15% H2O, is prepared by adding to a solution of an ammonium salt of a strong acid, especially ammonium chloride, firstly a sodium silicate solution and then a sodium aluminate solution, in which the sodium silicate solution contains 150-270 g.p.l. SiO2, the mole ratio Na2O:SiO2 being 1:2-1:4, and in which the sodium aluminate solution contains 50-200 g.p.l. Al2O3, the mole ratio Na2O:Al2O3 being 1.3:1-3:1, and in which the ammonium salt solution is present in an amount 2% to 10% in excess of that required to neutralise the sodium silicate and aluminate. The mixture is stirred continuously and its temperature maintained above 60 DEG C. The product has an average particle size less than 50 millimicrons, and is suitable for use as a filler for rubber. The ammonium chloride solution employed may contain 80-130 gms NH4Cl per litre. An excess in the final reaction mixture of up to 20% of sodium silicate or sodium aluminate is tolerable.
