[Also in Group XXV] In a writing instrument e.g. e retractable ball point pen, having a barrel to which a pocket clip 2 is pivotally connected, the clip has two side members 3 extending into the barrel through an aperture in the wall thereof with the lower end portions of the side members i.e. the end portions nearer to the writing end of the instrument, in engagement with the lower edge of the aperture to provide a fulcrum on which the clip can pivot, and a spring 5 fitted to the inside of the barrel bears on the underside of two abutments 10 near the top of the side members 3 and urges the top of the clip outwardly of the barrel. The members 3 have slots 4 formed in their lower edges to receive the lower edge of the aperture in the barrel. The spring 5 is fastened inside the barrel by a projection 7 which engages in a slot in the barrel, and extends to the rear end of the clip 2 between side members 3. Two sideways extending projections 8 on the spring 5 engage beneath the abutments 10 which have extensions 14 to limit outward movement of the clip. The spring has two further projections 12 which engage the front wall of the clip and is biased so as to urge the upper part of the clip outwards of the barrel. The pen barrel may contain projecting and retracting mechanism of the type described in the Specification 841,767, in which case inward rocking of the rear end of the clip 2 serves to disengage a latching detent 17 from a lip formed at the rear end of the barrel aperture and allow retraction of the writing unit.
