Abstract
<PICT:0841665/IV (c)/1> Apparatus for crimping yarn, tow, &c., comprises a tube 14 having a saddle at the bite of feed-rolls 21, 22 to form a crimping-chamber 40 where the yarn &c. is crimped as it is fed against a mass of yarn held compacted in the tube; take-up means 70 to withdraw the crimped yard under tension from the tube; and a sleeve 43 inside the tube which extends from one end of the tube to a point adjacent the crimpingchamber, has an inner passage forming a continuation of the crimping-chamber, and is spaced away from the walls of the tube to provide an annular passage to which treating-fluids can be admitted by suitable connecting-means. The crimping-chamber is formed by a tapered bore in a thickened part of the tube 14; the tube is secured in position by a nut 15 on a screwed split end of a tube 13 forcefitted into the block; and the sleeve is secured to the tube by a bush 45 and a cap-nut 46. Treating-fluid (steam, hot water, setting liquid or dye) can be admitted to the annular passage and thence to the crimping-chamber from a pipe 49 through a passage 44; the supply can be interrupted by a valve 50 or by adjusting the sleeve to close the passage. A cup 60 to introduce oil, setting liquid or dye into the sleeve; a plug 67 resting on the yarn; a heating-element 51; and spring-means 31 to maintain the rolls 21, 22 in engagement with the yarn &c. are provided.
