Abstract

In an injection moulding apparatus an injection piston 18 extends into an injection chamber 14 and contains a transfer chamber 23 to which moulding material is continuously fed, the material being transferred therefrom by a piston 20 into the injection chamber 14 through a non-return valve 24. The injection piston 18 comprises a sleeve and is moved to the injection-completed position seen in Fig. 2 (not shown) by pistons 41 acting on lateral extensions 38, 39 thereof. After injection and during cooling, a feed screw 22 continues to feed material to the transfer chamber 23 until a pressure build-up forces the piston 20 therefrom (Fig. 3, not shown), the non-return valve closure member 31 remaining seated on the end of the sleeve 18. Fluid is then admitted to cylinders 46, thereby withdrawing rods 48 and the sleeve 18 attached thereto (Fig. 4, not shown). Simultaneously fluid is exhausted from the cylinders 40, the screw 22 continues to rotate and material is transferred through passages 32 in a head part 29 of the valve into the injection chamber. When the sleeve 18 has withdrawn fully (Fig. 1) injection is initiated by evacuating fluid from the cylinders 46 and supplying fluid to the cylinders 40. During injection the sleeve 18 affords a seating for the complementarily shaped end of the valve member 31. The injection orifice may be provided with a regulator valve 100 (Fig. 8) comprising a cylindrical housing 101, a nozzle 102 and a needle valve closure 103, a central bore 104 thereof opening into the injection chamber 14, a point 106 of the needle valve closing the nozzle 102. An hydraulically operated lever 108 pivoted at 109 acts on a shoulder 107 of the needle to regulate the passage of material through the nozzle 102. The lever is acted on by a piston 110 in a regulator cylinder 111 supplied with pressure fluid through a conduit 112.
