Abstract

841,405. Cathode ray tubes. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Feb. 20, 1958 [Feb. 25, 1957], No. 5567/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XXIII] A perforate shadow mask, for selectively transmitting electron beams in a cathode ray tube and consisting of a thin sheet of glass having a plurality of substantially uniform perforations extending through the sheet, is subjected to a hydrogen-containing atmosphere at elevated temperatures to render the glass capable of bombardment with electrons without appreciable evolution of cathode poisoning gas, such as oxygen, during the life of the tube. The mask is fired in a reducing atmosphere containing at least 25% hydrogen, the remainder consisting of nitrogen. The temperature used will be of the order of 100‹C below the glass softening point. Specifications 699,897, 752,243 and U.S.A. Specification 2, 625, 734 are referred to.
