Abstract

[Also in Group XXXI] In a vehicle having an engine exhaust brake 11, Fig. 1 and a manual control member 36, Fig. 1a for setting the fuel injection valve 39 to zero delivery or for an adjustable idling speed, means comprising fluid operated cylinders, 13, 30 is provided for simultaneously actuating the exhaust brake 11 and setting the control member 36 to its zero delivery position. In one example the throttle pedal 45 actuates the fuel injection valve 39 through a two-armed lever 42 which is located for idling or zero delivery by contact with a stop 33 on the lower end of a two-armed lever 32 operated from the idling speed control member 36 through a link 35. A spring 41 normally urges the arm 42 into contact with the stop 33. On application of the vehicle brake pedal 15 and cylinder 23 the mutual movement rotates a cam 16 operating a valve 20 which supplies pressure fluid to the cylinders 13, 30 to operate the exhaust brake 11 and to move the two-armed lever 32 so that the stop 33 on its lower end moves to permit the spring 41 to return the throttle valve 39 to the cut-off position. A stop 34 on the upper end of the lever 32 prevents the throttle 45 from being operated beyond the idling position. A valve 26 controlled by a governor 27 prevents operation of the exhaust brake when the engine approaches stalling speeds. In a modification the cylinder 30, Fig. 2 is mounted on the steering column and coupled directly to the idling speed control lever 36. The return movement of the throttle pedal 45 is limited by contact with a stop 49 connected to the lever 36 through a push rod 47. In a further example, Fig. 3 (not shown) movement of the accelerator 45 is automatically prevented by a linkage mechanism when the engine brake is operating.
