Abstract

1373221 Regulating I C engines; spray carburetters REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 8 Dec 1971 [15 Dec 1970] 57111/71 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] The removal of pressure from the accelerator pedal 1 causes a device to be operated which ensures that the engine speed is reduced to idling if the carburetter throttle valve actuating system connected to the pedal malfunctions. A plate 4 pivotable with the pedal 1 about a common fixed axis 2 is connected to the throttle valve 6 and the pedal is pivotable relative to the plate by a spring 3. In the embodiment shown a switch 8 closes the circuit of a solenoid 13 to move an air valve 14 to a flow reducing position when the pedal is not pressed. The solenoid may operate a valve downstream of the carburetter. In further embodiments, Figs. 3, 6 and 7 (not shown) the switch 8 energizes a solenoid (22), Fig. 3, to move a valve member (20) to close the main carburetter jet (24) or energizes a solenoid coil (84), Fig. 6, to release a clutch (78, 80) in the connection between the throttle cable 5 and a shaft (77) linked to the valve 6. In another embodiment Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the throttle linkage contains a collapsible unit (59) which is effectively rigid when subjected to vacuum. The accelerator pedal (51) operates a valve (65) on the associated plate (52) which opens the unit (59) to atmosphere and thereby collapses the unit when the pedal is not pressed.
