Abstract

A process for the production of aryl-alkyl thioethers wherein the aryl radical may be substituted comprises reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon or a substitution product thereof with a dialkyl disulphide in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst or a bleaching earth. Friedel-Crafts catalysts specified include aluminium chloride or bromide, ferric and zinc chlorides, tin tetrachloride, antimony pentachloride and boron fluoride. Alkyl thiols produced as secondary products may be oxydized to dialkyl sulphides and the latter used as starting materials. Specific products produced in the process include methyl mercaptoxylol, 2 - hydroxy - (methyl mercapto) benzene, 2- and 4-hydroxy-(methyl mercapto) benzenes, 2 - hydroxy - 5 - methyl - 1 - methyl - mercaptobenzene and 2 - hydroxy - 5 - chloro - 1 - methylmercaptobenzene. Solvents employed include chlorobenzene and carbon tetrachloride.
