Abstract
In the thermal hydrodealkylation of alkyl aromatic hydrocarbns in a metal reactor, the reactor is pretreated with hydrogen sulphide to form a metal sulphide coating, the hydrocarbon is then passed through with hydrogen at 621-982 DEG C. and at least 7 kg./cm.2g. and at intervals the feed is stopped and replaced by a flow of hydrogen sulphide or other sulphur compound in the hydrocarbon feed to maintain the sulphide layer. Other sulphur compounds which may be used are alkyl mercaptans, carbonyl sulphide, carbon disulphide or sulphur dioxide or trioxide.
