Abstract

CS2 is produced from sulphur and one or more hydrocarbons, which are liquid or solid at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, by a process which comprises atomizing, vaporizing, and preheating the hydrocarbon(s) followed by reaction with sulphur vapour. The hydrocarbon particles may be injected into an evaporator-heater unit maintained 300-700 DEG C. at a linear speed of 50-100 m./sec. The temperature of the reaction zone may be between 500 and 950 DEG C. A catalyst may be employed. H2S is formed as a by-product.
