Abstract
A method of treating a sulphite-containing aqueous solution to produce elemental sulfur while keeping sulfate by-products to a minimum, comprising the steps of: (a) contacting the sulphite solution with a reducing agent, selected from the group consisting of of finely divided sulfur, a polysulfide compound, a water-soluble sulfide compound, and mixtures thereof, under thiosulfate production conditions, selected to form an outgoing fluid stream containing thiosulfate, (b) reacting the outgoing fluid stream from step (a) with a water-soluble sulfide compound under reducing conditions, selected to result in an outgoing fluid stream containing a polysulfide compound and, (c) subjecting at least part of the outgoing fluid stream from step (b) at polysulfide decomposition conditions, effective to form elemental sulfur, a sulfur compound and an aqueous stream treated.
