Abstract

Terphenyls are obtained by the pyrolysis of benzene and recycled benzene diphenyl and polyphenyls higher than terphenyls, at 750-850 DEG C., the feed having a weight ratio of benzene to diphenyl being 2-4 : 1 and the weight ratio of higher polyphenyls to diphenye being 0.2-1 : 1. The pyrolysis is effected for a time of 0.1-25 seconds at normal pressure. Tube furnaces may be used or a moving heat carrier. 0.1-1% of sulphur in the form of sulphur, hydrogen sulphide or carbon disulphide may be added to reduce corrosion of steel surfaces. The terphenyls separated by fractional condensation or distillation contain about 10% ortho, 60% meta and 30% para isomer. Specification 865,302 is referred to.
