Abstract

A fuse element comprises a silver or copper conductor, or alloys thereof, coated with an alloy which is at least ternary, one component of the alloy being a metal which alloys readily with the conductor but does not readily diffuse therein and another component being a metal which readily diffuses into the conductor but does not readily alloy therewith. The alloy may for example comprise: .1-20%.(preferably 4-12%) of zinc .5-35%.(preferably 15-25%) of cadmium and a balance of tin Preferably quaternary alloys are used, for example for a copper conductor: .1-20%.(preferably 4-10%) of bismuth .1-20%.(preferably 4-12%) of zinc .5-30%.(preferably 15-25%) of cadmium, and a balance of tin, or for a silver conductor: .5-30%.(preferably 8-20%) of bismuth .5-30%.(preferably 12-18%) of cadmium .10-40%.(preferably 24-30%) of lead, and a balance of tin Indium may replace the bismuth in the above examples.
