840,569. Covers for resisting fluid pressure. SCHOLZ, G. Jan. 1, 1958 [Jan. 5, 1957], No. 89/58. Class 123(1) Premature opening of a pressure vessel 1 having a cover 6 secured thereon by bayonet fastening lugs 3, 5 is prevented whilst pressure still remains in the vessel by a rod 34 which passes through a hole in the vessel rim ring 2 and into a hole 15 in one of the lugs 5. When the vessel is to be unsealed a test valve 12 is opened to vent the pressure fluid therein, the stream of escaping fluid impinging on a cup 23 carried on the end of a counterbalanced lever 21 to lift it against a stop 26. Whilst the cup is lifted by the issuing fluid a mercury switch 20 carried on the lever is open and interrupts an electric circuit including a solenoid 19 adapted to lift the rod 34. Under this condition a spring 16 forces the rod into its locking position in the hole 15. When the vessel is fully vented, the cup 23 falls to the position shown and the switch 20 closes causing the solenoid to lift the rod clear of the hole 15 against the pressure of the spring 16 whereupon the cover 6 may be turned to its removal position. In a modification, the rod 34 is lifted by a pressure actuated diaphragm. As an additional safeguard discs 9, 10 provided on the operating spindles of the pressure fluid supply valve 13 and the vent valve 12 respectively co-act with plates 7, 8 on the cover ring to prevent opening rotation of the latter until the valve 13 is closed and the valve 12 opened.
