Abstract
839,382. Steam turbines. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Jan. 17, 1958 [Jan. 18, 1957], No. 1879/57. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XIII] Feedwater from a heater 23, in which it is heated by steam bled from a turbine 12, passes to a condenser 26 for the exhaust steam from auxiliary turbines 11, e.g. for driving fans supplying combustion air to the furnace of the steam generator 10, and the feedwater is thus heated further before passing to the economizer 18 of the generator. The temperature is said to be above that at which condensation will occur in the economizer. Steam from a superheater 19 passes to the fan turbines 11 as well as to the main turbine 12. When there is low loading of the main turbine 12 excessive heating of the feedwater in the condenser 26 is counteracted by reducing the supply of bled steam to the heater 23 by means of a valve 28 having a diaphragm acted upon by the back pressure of the fan turbines 11 through a line 27. At lower loads one of the fan turbines 11 may be tripped out automatically to reduce the back pressure and so reduce the throttling action of the valve 28. In an alternative arrangement for lower loads, a diaphragm valve 29, responsive to the fan turbine back pressure, releases excess exhaust steam, through a conduit 30 to a main condenser 13.
