838,420. Cutting-out presses. GOLDING, W. F. Jan. 30, 1958 [Feb. 5, 1957; May 23, 1957], Nos. 3950/57 and 16451/57. Class 31 (1). [Also in Group XVI] A chase of the kind for use with an inverted forme and comprising an open frame in which the forme is supported by wedges or like pressure means between the periphery of the forme and the inside of the frame, and supportable on a platen of a platen press comprises a bar connected to the frame at two opposite side members thereof and extending across the frame above the forme space, the forme being securable to the bar to be supported thereby against bowing from the associated platen. An assembly of creasing-knives 20, Fig. 2, and wooden spacing blocks 19 with a steel backing sheet 18 to which some of the blocks may be screwed, is held by wedges in a frame 5, Figs. 2 and 3, provided with two bars 9 behind the assembly space to which some of the blocks 19 are secured by screws 21 to eliminate sagging of the assembly. The bars 9 may be formed at each end with blocks extending downwardly and pivoted to the frame sides 7, 8, the blocks being accommodated either outside or in slots in the sides 7, 8 so that the bars can be raised clear of the sheet 18 while inserting the assembly and for make-ready. The bar blocks also support the frame sides to impart rigidity thereto. The sides 7, 8 are bevelled at 10, 11 and engage corresponding bevels on the platen 1 of the creasing-machine, while the bars 9 are formed with bevels 12 engaging bevels 17 on the platen. The frame is positioned on the bevels by levers 22 pivoted on the machine frame and pressed against the side 10 by means of a hand wheel 31. When the levers 22 are withdrawn, the sides 6 of the frame rest on rollers 32 provided on the platen. According to the first Provisional Specification, the bars may be trapezoidal in crosssection with the small faces downwards, and fit in corresponding grooves in the platen, which grooves taper longitudinally to give room in each for two wedge members, one on each side of the bar, so that on movement of the wedge members in one direction, the frame is moved upwardly against the platen and locked.
