UNITED STATES CLAUDE L. POST, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CLAM'PING MEANS FOR PRINTING SLUGS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed October 3, 1824.
My invention relates to improvements in clamping means and more particularly to means adapted to removably secure one or more printing slugs or blocks upon a type roll or the like, the same being adapted for use in envelope handling and printing devices. My invention has among its objects the production of a device of the kind described which is simple, durable, reliable, efficient, compact and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable. It has particularly as an object the production of an adjustable clampingmeans for securing type,
particularly printing slugs or the like,'-tothe type roll which permits the slugs being adjusted on the roll, and is adapted for rolls of various types of presses. I have particularly shown the same as applied to my improved press. The same also includes means cutting'the slugs so that they are uniform and fit the roll and clamping means. Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosures herein given.
To this end my invention consistsin the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts here-in shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the -claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view through a. printing machine, embodying the improvements herein set forth;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the roll;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same;
Fig. 4 is a section taken substantially on line 44 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a section taken substantially on line 55 of Fig. 3;
Fig.6isaperspective view of the spacer'S;
Fig. 7 is a View similar to Fig. 4-, illustrating a modified arrangement; and V Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
In the drawings. wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 represents a portion of the printing mechanism frame, a complete press not being shown, and 3 represents the type roll with which is associated the feed or impression roll 4;, it being understood that the I parts are driven in any suitable manner, one
type of driving mechanism being herein- Serial No. 741,427.
' cured thereon and a feeding are 2 arranged to cooperate with the type roll, as shown in Fig. 1. The envelopes or other matter to be printed are delivered between the rolls 3 and 4 in any suitable manner, not necessary to describe herein.
The particular type roll shown is arranged to secure and carry one or more linotype slugs 5, having the usual character 6 thereon for printing purposes, the slugs being produced in the usual manner, not necessary to describe herein. As shown the roll 3 has a groove 7 therein, the depth of the groove being such that when the slugs rest on the bottom 7 the face 6 will be in proper printing position to cooperate with the roll 4. As shown, the faces of the slugs '5 are parallel, and to maintain the same in proper relation to the groove I provide wedgeshaped spacers 8, which, when they are inserted, properly space and retain the slugs in printing position. The two end or side spacers 9 I prefer to make with parallel sides, although printing slugs, when required, may be employed in place of either one of the spacers 9. Arranged over the slugs is a plate or frame 10 having an opening 11 through the same, through which the printing faces 6 of the slugs project, the plate being of such thickness that it does not project to or beyond the face of the slugs. As shown, the slugs are provided with a shoulder portion 13-1 1, this being cut so that the slugs fit the frame and so that the frame may fit close on the roll face.
Referring to Fig. 4:, it will be noted that the frame is preferably beveled at the edges or ends, as indicated at 12. At either side of the type groove 7 is provided a wedge-shaped slot 15 in each of which I arrange Wedgeshaped members 16. These wedge-shaped members are mounted on a rod 17 which is preferably threaded in opposite directions able manner, as, for example, by a motor 26 operatively connected with the drive shaft 25, which is arranged to transmit power from the motor to a drive wheel 29 cooperating with the drive member 30. To facilitate cutting the shoulders 13 and 14 on the slugs, I prefer to provide a saw 27 and table 28, the saw being driven from the shaft 25 or in an equivalent manner.
I have shown in Figs. 7 and 8 a modified clamping means which engages the slugs similar to the plate 10 and retains them firmly in place, the same being substantially a skeleton frame. Referring to these figures, 5 represents theslugs provided with the printing faces 6. The slot 7 is similar to that previously described, as are also the wedges 8. I havelikewise shown the slots 15. In this case the slugs 5 are shown with the shoulders 31 arranged at the ends of the slugs. At the shoulders 31 are rings 32 provided with ends 33 adapted to engage in the slots 15 and be firmly held therein. These clamping members 32 are made so as to fit substantially closely to the plate or slugs and be retained in place by the engagement with the undercut sides of the slots. They may be slipped on or off over the end of the roll.
It will be seen from the preceding that the rotation of the threaded bars 17 will move the clamping members 16 to tightly engage the plate and secure it together with the type slugs in place. Likewise with the rings 32 or segments, they will serve as a combined clamping member and roll engaging means.
The centering of the type on the roll may be as desired, the construction permitting adjustment on the type roll from one end to the other,and the device is applicable for accommodating one or more slugs. If only one slug is employed or desired, additional blank slugs or spacers 9 may be employed, or wedges of suficient width, to give the results. The type roll shown is applicable for slugs or plates.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I. do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
What I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
