CHARLES SOMMER ROSIN, OF TAOOMA, WASHINGTON.
l TYPE-CARRIER FOR CYLINDER-PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 769,022, dated August 30, 1904.
Application led September 30, 1903. Serial No. 175,177. (No model.) A i To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs SOMMER Rosnv,
' acitiz'en of the United States, and a resident of Tacoma, in the county ofPierce and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Type-Carrier for Cylinder-Presses, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to cylinder-presses employed for printing wooden boxes and the like; and the object of the invention is to provide a newv and improved type-carrier arranged with movable types, leads, spaces, border-bars, &c., to allow convenient changing of the subject-matter to be printed and to permit readily setting up the matter and attaching .the carrier to the cylinder of the press.
Theinvention consists of novel features and parts and combinations ofthe same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a face view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1." Fig. 3 is a crosssection of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.V Fig. 4. is a perspective View of 4one of the leads and adjacent border-bars disconnected; and Fig. 5 is ra rear face view of the frame and some of the leads, types, and border-bars in position.
The segmental frame or plate A is provided with an opening A' and with guideways A2, arranged parallel. oneto the other on the under side of the frame A adjacent to the side walls of the opening A', 'as plainly indicated in Fig. 2, and the said guideways A? are adapted to be engaged by the correspondinglyshaped ends B' o f leads B, adapted to extend lengthwise through the opening A', and the said guideways A2 are also adapted to be engaged by the correspondingly-shaped ends O' of border-bars O, having raised borders O2 for'printing borders, as hereinafter more fully described, the said border-bars U being joined at their ends by cross border-bars D, having tainer.
pins D' engaging recesses in the borders O2 of the border-bars, as will be readily understood by reference. to Fig. 4. The cross border-bars D extend over the leads B and are adjacent to the sides of the opening A', While the border-bars O fit snugly against the front and rear walls of the opening A', as will be readily understoodby reference to Fig. 5.
The leads B are spaced apart to accommodate types E and the spacers, quoins, vor like furniture F, some of which is also placed between a border-bar O and the next following lead B, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings. The side edges of the border-bars O and the leads B are preferably beveled, and the base portions of the types E and furniture F are similarly `beveled (see Fig. 3) to insure proper fitting of the v types on the said barsY and vleads to` securely hold the types and furniture in vplace against outward movement. The outer sides of the border-bars O are also beveled to iit on the corresponding bevels in the front and rear walls of the opening A'. (See Fig. 3.)
It is understood that the faces of the border-bars C and the border-bars D are in the same plane with the faces of the types E, so that when the device is used the types and the complete border make a proper impression.
' When the type and border have been set up in the manner described-that is, the opening A' has been filled-thenthe frame A is placed onto a retainer Gr, made segmental in shape to iit the peripheral surface of the printingcylinder, on which the retainer is fastened by screws or 'other fastening devices, which screws also extend through the frame A to securely lock the latter in place on the reeled to allow proper fitting of the retainer on theprinting-cylinder, it being, however, understood that the said bevels may be engaged by fastening devices other than screws to secure the retainer in place on the printing-cylinder. The retainer G forms a back for the type E, furniture F, and theborder-bars O and D to securely hold the same in place in the frame A and to prevent displacement of the said parts by moving the carrier to andv from the printing-cylinder.
The ends of the retainer G are bev- IOO By the arrangement described any desired matter may be set up by the use of the separate types, leads, and border-bars to allow of changing the subject-matter to be printed on the box whenever it is desired to do so. If desired, type-bars may be employed similar to the leads B, but having lines of typematter fixed thereon, such as the name of a place or other legends.
The carrier is very simple and durable in construction and can be cheaply manufactured and readily used on any cylinder printingpress employed for printing Wooden boxes and the like.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. Atype-carrier for cylinderpresses, com prising an open frame provided atopposite sides With parallel guideways, and a border formed of pairs of bars, of which the bars of one pair engage with their ends the said guidevvays, and the bars of the other pair are removably connected with the bars of the first-named pair of bars, as set forth.
2. A type-carrier for cylinderpresses, com prising an open frame having parallel guideways on the sides, leads extending through the opening of the frame and having their ends engaging the guideways, type and furniture filling the spaces between adjacent leads, and a retaining-plate for holding the said frame and forming a back for the said types and furniture, the ends of the said frame being beveled to lit corresponding recesses in the retainer plate, and the ends of the retainer-plate being beveled, as set forth.
3. A type-carrier for cylinder-presses,comprising an open segmental frame having parallel guideways on the underside, leads extending through the opening of the frame and having their ends engaging the guide ways, types and furniture filling the spaces between adjacent leads, a border formed of pairs of bars, of which the bars of one pair engage with their ends the said guideways, and the bars of the other pair are removably connected with the bars of the first-named pair, and a retaining-plate for the back of the frame, to hold the said types, furniture and leads in position, as set forth.
4. A type-carrier for cylinder-presses,comprising' an open frame having parallel guideways on the sides, leads extending through the opening of the frame and having their ends engaging the guideways, border-bars having their ends shaped to fit the said guideways, the said border-bars being provided with raised borders, and cross border-bars extending over the leads and engaging the borders of the first-mentioned border-bars as set forth.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two su bscribing Witnesses.
