JAMES B. CONNELL, F BRQQKLYN. NEW YORK.
PRINTING-FEE SS.
Application filed February 20, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES B. CoNNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Printin -Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing presses and more particularly to proof presses.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient press of this type which is portable and which embodies all the essential parts for obtaining a proof before locking the type in the chase.
Further objects of the invention Will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 1 is a transverse section taken on the line 1% of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a casing comprising bottom and side members 2 and 3 secure-d together in any suitable manner and adapted to receive the ordinary linotype lines or type form which may be provided with any suitable type clamping means 5 or which may be proofed in loose form. Journaled between the sides at one end of the casing is an ink distributing roller 6 having a crank 7 for operating the same and journaled between the sides at the opposite end of the casing is a shaft 8 upon which a paper roll 9 is mounted. This roll is provided with a clamping spring 10 and a cutter 11 which respectively prevent accidental unrolling of the paper and provide for the severing of the sheet after the proof has been made thereon.
Mounted upon the side members and ar ranged to move over the upper edges thereof is a shaft 12 upon which is mounted a frame 13 having journaled in opposite ends thereof the inking and impression rollers 14 and 15 the latter having extended pintles 16 to engage beneath the guide bars 17 secured to the inner sides of the side members 3 and having inclined rear ends, as indicated at 18. The frame is manipulated by a handle 19 secured thereto and is retained in po- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.

sition upon the case by depending lugs 20 secured to the aXle 12 and overhanging the sides 3.
In the operation of the device the linotype lines or type form are placed in the casing. The frame 18 is then placed upon the casing and the roller 14 moved into engagement with the roller 6 and sufficient ink applied to said roller 14. to ink the type. After the type has been properly inked a strip of paper is pulled over the type the frame is moved to the right and the pintles 16 engaged beneath the inclined ends 18 of the guiding bars 17 which are preferably made adjustable so as to regulate the amount of pressure applied, as will be readily understood. The frame is then moved toward the left so as to carry the impression roller over the sheet of paper. The frame may be then removed and the paper severed by drawing it across the cutter 11.
hat is claimed is 1. In a proof press, a casing adapted to receive printing elements, an ink distributing member arranged at one end of the casing, a paper roll holder arranged at the opposite end of the casing, an oscillatable frame slidably mounted over the casing and carrying inking and impression rollers ar ranged to be engaged with said printing elements, and means for holding the impression roller against the type elements in one direction of movement of the frame.
2. In a proof press, the combination with a casing adapted to receive printing elements, of an ink distributing member arranged at one end of the casing, a paper roll holder journaled at the opposite end of the casing, an oscillatable frame mounted for movement over the casing and carrying inking and impression rollers, arranged to be engaged with said printing elements guiding bars mounted in the casing, and means carried by the frame for engaging beneath the guiding bars for holding the impression roller to its work in one direction of movement of the frame.
3. In a proof press, the combination with a casing adapted to receive printing elements, of an ink distributing member arranged at one end of the casing, a paper roll holder journaled at the opposite end of the casing, an oscillatable frame mounted for movement over the casing and carrying of the casing for preventing lateral disl0 mkmg and impresslon rollers, arranged to placement of the frame.
