Description

No. 893,977. PATENTED JULY 21, 1908. s. BROWN TYPE HOLDING DEVICE FOR PRINTING MACHINES.
APPLIOATION FILED APR.11, 1907'. RENEWED JUNE 2. 1908.
6 I I v WZMSW5 SUMMERS BROWN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TYPE-HOLDING DEVICE FOR PRINTING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Original application filed July 9, 1906, Serial No. 325,343. Divided and application filed April 11, 1907,
Serial No. 367,682. Renewed June 2, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SUMMERS BROWN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Holding Devices for Printing-Machines and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for holding the type on the cylinder of a printing machine and facilitating the type setting and distributing.
Said invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly set forth and shown.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a plan-view of the cylinder of a printing machine embodying my invention, and certain proximate parts; Fig. 2 represents an enlarged detail cross-section of a part of the cylinder taken close to the inner edge of one of the rubber bands C and looking outward; Fig. 3 represents an enlarged detail side elevation of a part of one of the bars D, the proximate parts being shown in cross-section; Fig. 4 represents an enlarged detail side elevation of a part of one of the rods E and the row of notched type into which it fits, some proximate parts being shown in vertical section but less satisfactory; Fig. 5 represents a detail view of a modified form of type.
A designates the frame of the machine; B, the cylinder, having raised annular endflanges B and longitudinal grooves b to receive the type, these grooves being like those of my Patent No. 772,337 dated Oct. 18th, 1904, except that they are shallower. In juxta osition to the said end-flanges and integra therewith, the terminal parts of the cylinder are enlarged in diameter, providing raised parts B of less elevation but greater thickness than said end flanges, an annular face B and narrower faces B of less diameter are next thereto on the inner side.
0 designates a pair of rubber bands fitting on the annular faces B and providing the friction surface for feeding the paper and equalizing the pressure thereon. They also receive under them the projecting integral Serial No. 436,227.
lugs or end pieces d of a removable bar D, which extends longitudinally of the said cylinder and is shifted around the same at the distance of one groove from the last line of type as the type-setting proceeds, thereby always presenting a space or slot for the insertion of the next line of type.
E designates the longitudinal removable rods, corresponding in number to the lines of type F and fitting into the notches f of the latter. In the present instance they are not held by the pressure of the aforesaid rubber bands, as in the case of said patent, but their outer ends pass through holes e in one of the parts B and the adjoining integral end flange B slightly below the proximate peripheral face B, see Fig. 2. The inner ends of said rodsfit into sockets e correspondinglyformed in the other enlarged part B and contiguous portion of the other end flange B This construction and combination will space the rods E more accurately and absolutely and hold them more securely than when fastened in place only by rubber bands, as in my patent, aforesaid. The cylinder B is provided with journals B turning in bearings A of frame A and one of the end flanges B may be used for driving the said cylinder by connection with any suitable gearing. To this end it is provided with a peripheral series of cogs W, Fig. 1.
The operation of the various parts and elements of my device has already been sufliciently described in this specification.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cylinder provided with longitudinal grooves and terminal parts of greater diameter than its grooved portion, one of said parts being provided with perforations and the other with recesses in line with said grooves, in combination with lines of type notched on one side and arranged in said grooves and rods which are passed through said holes and into said recesses each rod fitting into the notches of one of the lines of type substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a grooved printing cylinder and type arranged in longitudinal lines in its grooves, a removable bar adapted to provide a space or slot between it and a line of type, to facilitate the setting of the next line, and rubber bands which fit I wnM S over parts of said bar, .ho]ding it removably in place on the cylinder and also providing a pressure and friction face for the same.
3. A printing cylinder having a series of lines of type and removable fastening rods and annular faces of increased diameter near its ends, in combination with rubber bands pressing on said faces and a spacing bar having parts adapted to be inserted between the said faces and the said bands substantially 10 as set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SUMMERS BROWN.
