JULES MIC-HAUD, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
MEANS FOR SECURING PLATES T0 CYLINDERS 0F ROTARY PRINTING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,698, dated April 16, 1895.
Application filed November 11,1892. Serial No. 451,682. (No model.) Patented in France December 16, 1889, No. 202,626, and August 6, 1890, No. 207,459, and in England October 9, 1890,110. 16,012, and December 8,1890,N0. 20,001.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ULES MICHAUD, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 96 Rue dAssas, Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Securing Plates to the Cylinders of Rotary Printing-lvlachines, (for which I have obtained a certificate of addition, dated June 13, 1890, to French Patent No. 202,626, dated December 16, 1889; a certificate of addition, dated December 12, 1890, to French Patent No. 207,459, dated August 6, 1890, and patents in Great Britain, No. 16,012, dated October 9, 1890, and No. 20,001, dated December 8, 1890,) of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improved means of securing printing plates on the printing cylinders of rotary printing machines generally, and more particularly on the cylinders of machines serving for color printing.
In order to obtain a true register of the different plates it is of great importance to be able to displace one of such plates to a slight extent without moving the remainder.
In the accompanying draWings: -Figure 1 is a transverse section and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of a printing cylinder, and show an arrangement of segments of circles for efitectin g the displacement of a printing plate in the direction of the length of a printing cylinder. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing a printing plate secured on a printing cylinder by my improved means.
When machines are constructed to receive several printing plates in the direction of the length of the cylinders, the latter are provided between such plates with circles having two bevels against which the printing plates abut.
In order to enable one of the printing plates to be displaced without moving the others, between such plates instead of a circle having two bevels, I employ segments or portions of circles and 61, (see Figs. 2 and 3,) each having a bevel, and each corresponding to one of the printing plates.
The part or segment of circle 60 has screwthreaded holes in which Work screws 62 and 63, such screws also passing through the se ment of circle 61, but freely through smooth holes. The screws 62, 63, are of just the length to fit the groove in the printing cylinder, and in which the portions of circles are placed, and in their centers they are made square to enable same to be turned in one direction or the other. The segments 60 and 61 cannot become detached from the cylinder,
becausethey are retained by the plates 66,
67, 68, which are fixed to thelatter. If,therefore, the screws 62 and 63 are caused to turn in one direction or the other, the segment 60 will be advanced or withdrawn and the printing plate bearing against same will be correspondingly displaced. In the same way for the segment 61, two screws 6% and 65 passing through screwthreaded holes therein and also passing freely through the segment 60, enable the printing plate bearing against segment 61 to be displaced.
Fig. 3 shows a printing plate fixed on the cylinder and bearing at the same time against the segment 60 and the rule or bar 20. Its
position having been accurately determined, it is securely fixed by the clamp 69 which is of ordinary construction and operates in the usual manner.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a rotary printing machine, the combination of a printing cylinder adapted to receive printing plates, movable segments mounted side by side transversely of the cylinder and corresponding in curvature to the printing plates thereon, and means for moving one of' said segments independently of the other to adjust one of said printing plates without displacing the other, substantially as described.
2. In a rotary printing machine, the combination of a printing cylinder adapted to receive printing plates, segments or parts of circles each provided with a single bevel corresponding to one of the printing plates mounted on such cylinder, and of screws, two of which screw into one segment and pass freely through holes in the other segment,
while the other two screw into the other segment and pass freely through holes in the first segment, for the purpose of enabling one printing plate to be adjusted without displacing the others, substantially as described.
3. In a rotary printing machine, the combination e f a printing cylinder adapted to receive printing plates, movable segments mounted on the cylinder and provided with recesses, retaining plates fitting in said reeesses and fixed to said cylinder for holding said segments, and means for moving one of said segments independently of the other to adjust one of said printing plates without displacing the other, substantially as de-' to scribed.
