T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. BEROLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wyoming, in `the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to printers blocks arranged for clamping thereon an electrotype or other plate from which printing is to be done, and the invention has -tor its object the provision o'l a block ot this character which is extensible in length and width in novel manner.
My invention consists in novel means whereby support is given to the plate at all the corners thereof, when an extension has been made; further in novel means for locating insert-strips employed in making extensions;` further in providing a multi-part extension blocl-z consisting of a plurality oit main, block-sections each o'l' which is arranged to be extended in a given direction, the block-sections heilig arranged for having separating means placed therebetween for adjusting the distance between the blocksections; and in novel arrangement of separating means extending in integral form crosswise of the insert-strips employed in. extending each of said block-sections.
The invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawings, in which flatter Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved device, with the plate removed. 23 and 24 are primary blocks. These primary blocks are arranged to have supplemental blocks 25 and 26 secured thereto respectively, provision bein made for the reception oi' insert-strips 27 etween the blocks 25 and 23, and the reception of corresponding insert-strips 28 between the blocks 26 and 24. One or more of each of these insertstrips may be employed. The supplemental block 25 has a plate-retaining lip 29 thereon and the primary block 4t has a plate-retaining lip 30 on the same. A main block-section 2l is thereby formed by the primary block 23, its supplementalblock 25 and the insert-strips 27, and a main block-section 22 is formed by the primary block 24, its supplemental block 2G and the insert-strips 28. These respective block-sections are extensi; blc in a given direction, instanced as a lateral extension by the insert- strips 27, 28, respectively. The block-section 22 is preferably auxiliary to the hlecksection 21. The insert-strips 27 are each provided with a groove 31 at one side thereotand with a tongue 32 at the' other side thereof. The blocks 23 and are provided with enacting tongue and groove, the tongue being shown on the block 25 at 4.0, and. the groove in the block 23 at 41. (See Figs. 7 and 10.) These tongues and grooves extend longitudinally of the strips, and are arranged so that any of the tongues may be received in any of the grooves for locating and denitely positioning the parts in height. For longitudinally positioning the parts, (see Figs. 1 and 7), I provide each o't' the insert-strips with a pin 33 and a hole 34, one of the coacting blocks,A instanced as the block 23, being provided with a similar hole i3 and the other of said blocks, instanced as the block 25, being provided with a similar pin 114i, these holes and pins registering with each other so that the blocks and the insert-strips are readily located lengthwise with relation to each other.
36 is a screw received through a hole 37 in the supplemental block 25 and in a threaded bearing 3S in the primary block 23. (See Figs. l and Zl.) Two of these screws are shown. The insert-strips 27 are provided with bottomless recesses 39 for being readily received over the screws.
The locating and clamping means between the parts of the auxiliary block-section 22 are similar to the locating and clamping means of the primary block-section 2l, corresponding parts being designated by similar but primed reference, numerals. (See Figs. l, 3, 6 and ll.)
rlhe insert-strips 27 are preferably of lengths equal to the blocks 23 and 25, and the insert-strips 28 are preferably equal in lengths to the blocks 24 and 26.
F or providing extension of the printers block in a direction at right angles to the eX- tensions provided for the main block-sections, (see Figs. 1, 2, 5, 8, 9 and l2), I provide insert-strips 46 arranged to be received between the main block-sections, these insertstrips preferably being received integrally across the pieced portions of said main bloclosections, the main block-sections being arranged to be clamped together with said insert-strips between them for completing the finished printers block. One or more of the insert-strips 46 may be employed.
The insert-strips 46 are preferably madeln various lengths corresponding tothe corn-l pleted width of the printers block. Each of the insert-strips 46 is provided with a tongue 47 at one side thereof and with a groove 4S at the other side thereof, the main block-sections being provided with a c'oacting tongue and groove, the tongues in the present instance being on the primary block 24 and on the supplemental block 26, as shown by the tongues 49, 50, and the grooves being in the primary block 23 and supplemental block 25, as shown by the grooves 5l and 52. These tongues and grooves form means for locating and maintaining the parts at equal height, so that the top of the printers block may at all times be of proper and uniform height for receiving and supporting the plate, shown at 45, and printing properly. For accommodating these tongues, the ends of the insert-strips 27 adjacent thereto are Aprovided with notches 58.
For locating the insert-strips 46 longitudi nally, I provide each of the same with a pin 53 projecting from one side thereof and a hole 54 in the other side thereof, one of the blocks 23, 24, being provided with a similar pin, as shown by the pin 55 on the block 24, the other of said blocks being provided with a hole 56. rlhese pins and holes register with each other for positioning said blocks and insert-strips in correct lateral relation. The ends 57 of said insert-strips beyond said pins and holes vary according to the width or number of insert-strips used for lateral extension and extend integrally across the latter for definitely locating all the parts in proper heights and imparting rigidity to the finished block.
For clamping the main block-sections together l provide a screw 60. (See Figs. l,
3 and 5.) The screw is received through a hole 6l in the primary block 24 and into a threaded bearing 62 in the primary block 23. The insert-strips 46 are provided with bottomless recesses 63 for being readily received over and removed from the screw 60.
The primary block 23 is provided with 7l received in a bearing 7 2 in the said primary block, its outer end being formed as a stud "Z3 journaled in abearing 74 of a bearing-strip let into the edge of said primary block and secured to said primary block by screws 76. rllhe primary block 23 is provided with a rabbet 8l. The primary block 24 is provided with a rabbet 82 and each of the insert-strips 46 is provided with a rabbet 83, for forming a continuous rabbet for permitting a usual rack-strip to be moved lengthwise thereof throughout the length of the form for operating all of the wheels 69 in line therewith. i
rlChe primary block 23 is provided with a rabbet 84. The supplemental block 25 is provided with a rabbet 85 and each of the insert-steps 2'? is provided with a rabbet 86, these rabbets being in line with the wheels G9 extending crosswise of the form. so that the rack-strip may be passed longitudinally of all said mating rabbets for clamping the plates to their several blocks.
My improved device permits a form containing a number of my improved printers blocks to be unlocked without disturbing the integrity or adjustment of the blocks or loosening the plates therefrom, and provides definite lines along which the plates are fastened. It further provides means whereby any one or all of the plates in a form may be removed or replaced without disturbing the make-up of the form. improved device further supports the pla-te at all corners thereof, and provides a uniform support for the plate throughout the area thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A printers block made up of a plural? ity of main block sections, each of which comprises a primary block and a supplemental bloclr of substantially the shape of a parallelogram, and insert strips between said primary and supplemental blocks, the supplemental blocks of both sections being of substantially the same width, and the insert strips being of less width, means in each of aov said main block sections for claming the said component parts thereof together, and means for positioning said main block sections at greater or less distance apart, and for positively clamping them together.
2. A printers block comprising a plurality of substantially rectangular main extensible sections each comprising means for adjustably extending the same in a given direction, and means extending integrally across said last-named means in each of said main extensible sections for adjustably separating said main extensible sections.
3. A printers block comprisinga plurality of main block-sections each of which comprises a pair of plate-supporting blocks, each of said blocks being oi substantially the shape of a parallelogram, means :for adj usting the distance between said blocks and means for clamping said blocks together, and means for adjusting the distance between said clamped main block-sections and clamping said clamped main block-sections together. l

In combination in a printers block comprising a plurality of main block-sections each comprising a plurality of block-parts, an insert-strip or strips, and means for securing said insert-strip or strips between said block-parts, an insert-strip or strips between said plurality of main block-sections and extending integrally across said lirst-named insert-strip or strips in each of said main block-sections, and means for securing said main block-sections together with said second-named insert-strip or strips between them.
5. A printers block comprisin a plurality of main block-sections, each oi said main block-sections comprising a pair of plate supporting blocks, means for adjusting the distance between said plate supporting blocks in a given direction, and means for clamping said plate supporting blocks together; insert strips for adjusting the distance between said main block sections in a direction substantially at right angles to said first named direction, and clamping means crossing all of said strips and having connection with each of said main block sections, and serving to hold said parts together.
6. A four-cornered printers block comprising a plate-supporting block at each corner of said printer-s block, and insertstrips received in crossing relation at substantially right angles to each other between said plate-supporting blocks for adjusting diagonally opposite ones of said plate-supporting blocks toward and from each other in directions both of the length and of the width of said printers block, the said insertstrips extending in one direction integrally across the said insert-strips extending at substantially right angles thereto.
7 In combination, a printers block cornprising a pair of main composite sections, each section being made up of primary and supplemental blocks, with insert strips between them, and an additional set of insert strips located between said main composite sections and extending integrally across all of said first mentioned strips and blocks, the end of such first mentioned strips abutting against said additional strips on each side.
