ELECTROTYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,278, dated December 23, 1890.
Application filed June 11,1889. Serial No- 313,888- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. HANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electrotypes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Myinvention consists of an electrotype having a backing of a different metal from the face and provided with tongues continuous of the backing, and a block of the same metal as the backing, having grooves adapted to receive said tongues.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an electrotype embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of an electrotype-plate proper.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates an electrotype-plate formed of copper or other suitable material and made separate from the block B, which supports the same. On the back of the plate, at the side thereof, are tongues O, and on the upper face of the block, at the sides thereof, are grooves D, Which receive the tongues 0, thus connecting the plate with the block, it being noticed that said tongues and grooves form dovetail joints, which prevent disconnection of the plate from the block and permit the plate to be applied to and removed from the block by sliding motions. By this provision a single block is serviceable for numerous plates of the same size, and the plate may be made thin, thus saving metal and expense in shipping and mailing, and also avoiding the expense of a block for each plate. The block can be made solid, of electro-met-al or other material, as desired, or cored, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. The plate is backed with a thin layer E of metal, and the tongues C are continuous of said layer and of the same metal, said metal being preferably similar to that of the block, and the top of the block is unbroken or solid, whereby there will be uniformity in printing when the electrotype is used.
I-Iavingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of an electrotype having a front of electro-metal and a backing of adifierent metal, such as lead, said backing being provided with tongues, with a block of the same metal as the backing and with grooves in its sides adapted to receive the tongues of the backing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An electrotype having a facing of electro -metal and a backing of lead or other metal, the said backing having tongues depending from the sides thereof, in combination with a block of the same metal as the backing and provided with grooves in its sides adapted to receive the said tongues, the top of said block being an unbroken surface, substantially as described.
3. An electrotype constructed of electrometal and having a backing layer of a nature different from the electrotype, and provided with tongues continuous of said layer and of the same metal as the latter, combined with a block of metal similar to the said backing and having grooves to receive said tongues, substantially as described.
