To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HEINRICH HARTMANN, subject of the German Emperor, residing at Ahrensbock, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Cloth for Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

The invention relates to improvements in cloths for printing presses, and more particularly to a means for securing the same in position on the printing rollers thereof.

It has been the practice in the prior art to fasten the well known fiber and rubber cloth to the roller of printing presses by means of a number of screws inserted through the cloth at one edge thereof. and into the working face of the roller. Upon the tensioning of this somewhat elastic cloth around the roller and especially after the same has been in service for a period of short duration, a number of folds or creases are invariably formed at one edge of the cloth, and between the screw fastenings therein, which folds are very injurious to the cloth and detrimental to the proper operation of the press and necessitates the removal and repositioning of the same on the roller. The cloth also very often stretches or pulls loose from the fastenings, causing the uneven distribution of the same over the face of the roller.

To obliterate the above mentioned objections and inconveniences, the present invention contemplates a new and novel construction of printing cloth, and one wherein the same may be held to the roller in a taut and even manner, and in such a way that folds or creases will not occur in the same during the life thereof.

Another object of the invention is to locate the fastening means, and the tensioning means for the cloth, in a position on the roller removed from the working face thereof.

With these and other objects in view, the preferred embodiment of the invention will be hereinafter more fully described, set forth in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in whicht- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a printing cloth having a bead formed on one edge thereof,

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and,

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a printing roller with the cloth applied thereto.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the bead formation.

Reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several views thereof, the letter A indicates a cloth adapted for use on a printing press, and formed of any suitable or well known material. Along one edge of the cloth A is a beading B comprising a folded portion of the cloth inclosing a suitable packing, provided with a wall J on the inner side thereof, forming a right angle with the body of the cloth. In securing the cloth in position, a bar C is seated in the angle formed by the wall J, of thebeading, and the same is provided with a plurality of apertures H for the reception of a similar number of screw I.

Formed in the working face of the roller D (Fig. 3) is a Vshaped groove F, and a circluar groove G, both of said grooves extending longitudinally of the roller D. The beaded end of the cloth A is adapted to seat in the groove F, and to be secured to one wall thereof by the bar C before referred to. The other end of the cloth is attached to a shaft E revolubly mounted in the groove G, or the same may be engaged by any of the well known means whereby the cloth may be tensioned around the roller.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed, is:-

1. In combination with a roller for printing presses, spaced grooves formed in the working face of said roller and extending longitudinally thereof, a cloth surrounding said roller, a beading formed on one edge of said cloth, means engaging said beading for securing said cloth in one of said grooves, and means mounted in the other of said grooves for tensioning said cloth around the roller.

2. In combination with a roller for print ing presses, spaced grooves formed in the working face of said roller and extending longitudinally thereof, a cloth surrounding said roller, a beading formed on one edge of said cloth, a bar engaging said beading and said cloth for securing the same in one of said grooves, a plurality of screws extending through said bar and said cloth into said roller, and means engaged by the 0pposite end of said; cloth and operable in the other fsaid grooves fer tensioning said cloth areund the roller.
