Be it known that I, GEORGE S. SMITH, of Bozrahville, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Yarn-Eveners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and

To enable those skilled in the art .to make and use my invention, I now proceed to `describe its construction and operation.

This invention is designed as an improvement in mechanismvfor evening yarn in spinning-machinery. It consists in passing the thread, while on -its way from the bobhin to the spool, between aY pair of needlepoints, for the purpose ofloosening imperfections, such as bunches, knots, and the like, in order that they may be more effectuaily removed by the trimmers provided forthc purpose.

In the drawings- A represents a vertical` wooden block, which is intended to be secured to a horizontal rail, not shown, saidrail-being attached to the frame of the spoolingmachinery.

The block A is provided with a metallic plate, B,

projecting at right angles from its lower sile, and supporting two small vertical shafts, whereof the outer one, C, is rigidly attached to the plate, and being provided witha circumferential groove, c, for the thread to run in, as it encircles the shaft on its way from the bohbins, forms a friction-stud.

The shaft D is attached to the plate by means of a screw, d, in such a manner that the shaftmay be made to project to a greater or less distance, at pleasure, from the plate B. This shaft heilig provided with a.

transverse groove in its outer endfo'r the thread to' traverse, forms a tension-stud to tighten'and harden the thread.

From the stud, the thread passes between two` needles, E E, whose points converge, and being each set in an adjustable plate, F, may he placed as near to or far from each other as may suit the size of the yarn. n

The function of the needles E is to loosen bunches in the thread formed by seeds spun into its texture, or by two ends twisting together, or in a variety of other ways, well known to manufacturers, which bunches'are removed by the trimmers I4" F', through which the thread next passes, said trimmers consisting of two steelv plates, sunk into the side of the block A, Hush with its surface, and fastened to said block hy means of screws x :c passing through slots in the plates.

The contiguous edges of thentrimmers having sharp corners, may, by thisineans, he adjusted according to the size of the thread, and may he depended on to finish the work of evening begun by the needles E E. From the trimmers Fthe thread passes on to the spol in a fit condition to be wound.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The adjustable needles E E, in combination with the adjustable trimmers F F', in a spooling-mechan ism, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth. l
