FALESN Walpole, in the countyof Norfolk, ,and State o f Massachusetts, have invented new anduseful Improvements on Carpet-Lining Machine; and I do herebydeclare that the following. is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side sectional view oi' a carpet-lining machine, with my improvements attached, taken inthe line y y, iig. 2. p

This invention relates to improvements on a carpet-lining machine, for which a patent was granted to John R. Harrington, dated April 1, 1856, which improvements consist iu the lcombination of theg'uiderollers, tho smoothiug-plate, a sewing-mechanism, and the' feedrolls, said smoothing-plate and sewing-mechanism being arranged between the guide and feed-rolls, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

A is the frame, on which, as in the Harrington machine, are hung the small guide-rolls, B Bl B, which receive the sheet-paper from'the feed-rolls, D D', above and below, for the lining of the carpet, with )the batting between them, as usual, and the large measuring-rolls, C C', all arranged and operating, by gearing, in the psual way. Qn one end of one of the measuring-rolls, C, is axed a wheel, E, having a tooth or spur, a, on its` periphery, lwhich engages in .the teeth bb, on a wheel, F, and on the side of thewheel Fis a'spuxgc, that catches a hammer, d, which strikes a bell, and thus gives the signal when the measurement-rolls have made acertain number of revolutions, and passed between them a given number of yards of fabric, as shown in iigf4 in detail. In frontof the guide-roll B a frame, G, is placed, to support a set of sewing-machines for stitching or quilting theI fabric as it moves forward to the measuring-rolls. The needles e e, any'desired number, are set in thisV frame above the fabric, and the looper g, for each needle, underneath, and. to'which motiouis to be given by means of any suitable gear-connection with the driving-shaft h, and so speeded as tomove in concert with the fabric passing between the measuring-rolls. Between the frame G and the yguide-rollB is placed a fiat metal smoothing-plate, H, which has a doubleinclne rib', lc, running from'the middle,.n the rear side, to the ends of the plate, for the purpose of pressing ont the wrinkles in the paper as it comes up to-the sewing-needles, the wrinklesV being carried to the edges successively. An adjusting set-screw, m, isarrangcd-`to bear on each end of the feed-rolls, D D', hung on uprights, n n, for the purpose of keeping the paper from passing beyond the ends of the roll, and producing friction.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the guide-rolls B B2, smoothing-plate H, a sewing-mecllanism, and feed-rolls C C', all arranged and operating substantially as set forth.

2. The` arrangement of the spring u, adjusting-screw m, and feecl-roller D', as. herein described, for the purpose specified.

3. In combination with a carpet-lining machina-constructed as described, the sewing-device, smoothingplate H, wheels E F, hammer d, spring u, and set-screw m, all arranged and operating as described, for the purpose specified. 1
