Description

MICHAELVR DORAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 92,432, dated Italy 13, 1869.
ROVEMENT IN spoons.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and part of the sama.
To Il whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL F. DORAN, of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented nn Improved Spool; and I do hereby 4declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of a winding or nnwindingspool,l marked substantially as and for the purpose described hereafter.
In order to enable others to'make and use my invention, I will new proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side View of my improved spool;
Figure 2, a section on the line 1-2, iig. l; and
Figure 3, an end view.
The spool consists of the usual spindle, A, and endpieces B, an opening, a., extendingthrouglr both, for the reception 'of the usual spindle.
On the inner side of one or both of the end-pieces or iianges B, are painted, or otherwise marked, stripes or other iigures, x, each of these extending across the edge ofthe end-piece, and terminating (in the present instance) on the outer side of the latter, a short distance below the edge, as secu in iig. 3.
In winding threads, 85e., upon, or in nn'winding them from a multitude 0f spools or bobbins'of the ordinary description, it is difficult, even for an expert attendant, to perceive, at all times, a cessation of the motion of any one or more f the spools. l/Vhen, therefore, through any cause, a thread is broken, and the turning'of the spool consequently arrested, the fact is liable to escape the immediate notice of the attendant. By striping or otherwise marking the end-piecesof the spool, however, as described above, the breaking of a thread, and consequent cessation of the revolutionof the spool, are at once indicated to the attendant, who has to apply the remedy.
I claim as my invention, and desire .to secure by Letters Patent- A winding or unwinding-spool, marked substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.V
MICHAEL F. DORAN.
