Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE;
ALBERT e. WNADE, on ELKHART, INDIANA.
PLATE AND BASE FOR PRINTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,371, dated December 4, 1894.
Application filed June 8, 1394. Serial No. 513,911; (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that I, ALBERT G. WADE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elkhart,in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plates and Bases for Printing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to plates and bases for printing, and has for its object to provide an entire solid and equal foundation for all parts to form a perfect, rigid and even impression throughout its entire surface and wherein the plate can be taken directly oh its base without removing the base from the form in order that another plate may be substituted,
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed;
In the drawings:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a base and plate embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line XX of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line y y of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of referenceare employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views. I
Referringto the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a base which is of the ordinary form and having an upper flat smooth surface and at one end thereof is secured'a metallic plate 2, preferablyof brass, which is formed of'the same width as the base and at the center thereof is a recess, and on each side thereof I are upwardly projecting flanges 3 having an inner beveled wall 4, the said flanges stand ing above the surface of the base, To the opposite end of the base is applied a plate 5 of the same conformation, made with a central recess 6 and opposite end flanges 7 whose inner surfaces are beveledas at'8, the said end flanges 7 standing opposite and of equal extentto the flanges 3 on the plate 2, while the recess 67in the plate 5 has its terminating side walls in line with the outer sides of the recess in the plate 2. i
The plate 9 is applied to the flat surface of venting the plate 5from becoming lost and '9. By this means the plate 9 is held in removable connection with the base firmly against a smooth surface and may be removed at will without the use of a mallet or injury of the plate or base while the electrotype and its base are held in the form. A further advantage of this device is that a flat surface is presented with an even printing foundation and by the use of the device there is considerable economy in timeand cost.
The plate 5 has connected thereto a pair of bolts or pins let, which are movably attached to one of the cross ribs or a projection of the base 1, the said bolts or pins being long enough to permit the plate 5 to move back: ward from and upward against the end of the base in the process or operation of applying or removing the electro-type plate "and pro also holding it in convenient operative'posf tion. a a L a,
What is claimed as the invention ise 1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a base having a smooth surface and plates at theopposite ends thereof, each of which is provided with a central recess and outer flanges having inner beveled faces, of a printing plate formed at each of its ends with a projecting tongue and with outer recesses having beveled edges, the said tongues fitting the recesses in the said plate, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a base having a smooth surface and plates at the opposite ends thereof, one of which is rigidly secured to said base and the other loosely secured thereto, each of the said plates being provided with a central recess and outer flanges having inner beveled I00 faces, of a printing plate formed at each of its ends with a projecting tongue and with outer recesses having beveled edges, the said tongues fitting the recesses in the said plates, as and for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a base having a smooth surface and plates at the opposite ends thereof, one of which is rigidly secured to said base and the other secured thereto by means of bolts passing through a portion of the said base which give the said plate a limited movement away from said base, each of the said plates being provided with a central recess and outer flanges having innerbeveled faces,
ALBERT G. WADE.
