STEREOTYPE PLATE AND BASE,

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,532, dated December 22, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD PRESTON MICKEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stereotype-Plates and Bases or Blocks Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in stereotype plates and bases; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

My invention is peculiarly adapted for newspaper matter, which is set in columns; but it may also be employed for printing books and for other purposes; and the object of my invention is to provide a stereotypeplate and a base or block which will enable the plate to be readily secured to the block or removed therefrom, and which will at the same time prevent the plate from being drawn upward from the block when arranged in a form and in use in a printing=press. These objects I obtain by the construction and arrangement of devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-=- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stereotype-plate and a base or block therefor embodying my improvements, the plate being shown disconnected from the block. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view showing the plate connected to the block.

A represents the block or base, which may be made of wood or metal or any other preferred material, and is provided on its upper of which are parallel and are arranged at a suitable angle, preferably at an angle of fortyfive degrees, with relation to the vertical sides of the base or block. The said grooves are arranged within a suitable distance of the sides of the block or base, as shown.

(3 represents the stereotype-plate, which is provided on its lower side with depending longitudinal flanges D, which are adapted to enter the grooves 13 and have their sides arranged at the same angle with the sides of said grooves. The said flanges D are cast inte grally with the stereotype-plates, and also cast integrally with the same are depending flanges or supports E, which are arranged at'the sides scribed.

and at the center of the plate and are adapted to bear upon the upper side of the block or base when the plate is attached thereto, so as to support the plate and entirely relieve the flanges D of strain when the plate and base are locked up in a form and are in use in a printing-press. It will be observed by reference to Fig. 2 that the depth of the locking-flanges D is somewhat less than the depth of the grooves B, so that slight open spaces are left under the said locking-flanges D when they are in the said grooves B, and thereby the entire strain exerted-upon the plate by the press is supported by the sup porting-flanges E, and consequently the locking-flanges D do not become mashed or swaged and jammed iu the flanges B. Owing to the inclined sides of the locking-flanges D and the grooves B, which receive them, the plate, when secured on the base or block, as shown in Fig. 2, is effectually keyed thereto and cannot be drawn therefrom when locked up in a form. 1

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the base or block A,

having the grooves B,with inclined sides, and the plate 0, having the depending inclined locking-flanges D, adapted to engage grooves B, the depth of said locking-flanges being less than the depth of said grooves, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the block having the grooves B, with inclined parallel sides, and the plate 0, provided on its under side with the locking-flanges D, with inclined parallel sides, said flanges being adapted to enter grooves B, the length of said flanges being less than the depth of said I grooves, the said plate being further provided with the depending supporting-flanges E, adapted to bear upon the upper side of the block or base, and thereby prevent pressure from being exerted 011 the locking-flanges, substantially as de- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as niyownIhave hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
