Description

N. P. WALTBRS.
LIPTING JACK.
(No Model.)
WITNESSBS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE'.
NILS PETTER WALTERS, OF FORT MADISON, IOWA. i
LI FTlNG-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,519, dated August 8, 1882.
1 Application tiled J une 20, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NILs P. WALTERS, of Fort Madison, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact. description of the invention, which will' enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forln a part of this specification.
This invention relates to jacks or levers for raising railroadrails, and has for its object to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and efficient device that will operate without throwing the track out of line. To this end it consists in certain improvements in the construction and operation of the device.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of the jack; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal sectional view; Fig, a transverse sectional view.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the base-block, which is preferably formed of wood, and provided with a beveled front edge, B, and a recess, C.
To the base A are bolted two upright plates or standards, D D, by means of bolts E passing through a horizontal flange,F, at the bottom ot' each plate D, and a plate, G, binding against the under side ot' the block A.
The plates D D are each provided with three or more corresponding vertical rows, H H2 H3, of perforations, through which are adjusted transverse pins or bolts .I I2 13.
J designates a lever having transverse curved grooves K Kin its under face, and provided at its weight end with a hinged or pivoted substantially L- shaped lifting-toe, L.
A cross-bail or loop, M, may be provided at the top of the plates D D to facilitate lifting of the device.
The operation and advantages of myinvention will be readily understood.
1n use the beveled edge of the base-block is placed under the rail and the lever adjusted to the desired point on the pins I or 12, with its lifting-toe under the rail and its transverse grooves on the pin to preventdisplacement of the lever. The power end ofthe lever is then depressed, the cross-pins acting as afulcrum, and the rail lifting in the same vertical plane by reason of the toe being hinged. The pin l3 may then be placed over the lever, and will hold the same, with the track, elevated.
If desired, the perforations in plates D D, instead of being in straight rows, may be placed in a zigzag line for purposes of greater strength.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the base-block having a beveled front edge and a depression or recess, of the parallel correspondingly-perforated plates and transverse pins or bolts, and the lever havingcurved transverse grooves on its under face, and a pivoted or hinged lifting-toe, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the base-block, of the parallel correspondingly-perforated upright plates or standards having horizontal flanges, a plate binding against the under side of the base-block, the transverse pins, and lifting-lever, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NILS BETTER WALTERS.
