Description

" UNITED STATES PATENT Orric ADOLPHUS D. GOODWIN, OF NEAR GOSHEN BRIDGE, VIRGINIA.
Ll-FTlNG-JAC K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,790, dated December 12, 1882.
Application filed October 27, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADOLPHUS D. Goon- WIN, a citizen of the United States, residing near Goshen Bridge, in the county of Rockbridge and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Lifting-Jack, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to lifting-jacks, and more especially to that class of jacks which are designed to be used for elevating vehiclebodies so that their wheels may be removed or manipulated. It has for its object to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and efficientjack that can be readily and easily operated.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved jack. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the lower portion, and Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of the basesocket.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the vertical standard, which rests in a base-socket, 13, comprising a bottom plate, I), having vertical sides I) b. On the latter rest shoulders a t at the sides of the standard, while the lower end, 0., thereof is secured between the sides by transverse securing-bolts O and nuts D.
.By-operating the nuts and bolts the socket may be separated from the standard. The top portion of standard A is bifurcated to form vertical side extensions or flanges, a a having beveled or inclined edges. formed with a series of curved notches, a forming bearings, as hereinafter specified.
. E is the lifting-lever, which is provided with a transverse pin, e,near its front end, adapted to he placed in any of the notches a to form a fulcru'm. The front lifting end, e, of lever E works between extensions a a and is provided at its tip with a concaved plate, F,held
- in place by its screw-threaded shank f, passing down through the lever and retained by a nut, G. Plate F will receive the under side of the axle, by which the vehicle is elevated. Should the pin 6 become disengaged from the notches the lever end 6' would only fall to the curved top a of the standard between extensions a a It will be observed that the base-socket extends some distance both in front and in rear of the standard, and from between this rear extended portion projects a supporting-rod,- H, pivoted at its lower'end in a recess, of, in the bottom of standard Ahy means of a transverse pin, I. One edge of rod H isprovided with right-angular notches h, which engage a cross-pin. J, in a slot, 0 in the handle end of lever E, through which slot the notched end of rod H works.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. the front end of the lifting-lever is adjusted at the desired height in the notches, and the front end of the lever is adjusted under the object to be lifted. Now, by hearing on the lever, the latter is raised, and the supportingrod, which is held in the other hand, is ar ranged with one of its notches engaging the pin in the slot of the lever to hold the latter in its position.
The pin at I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a vehicle-lifting jack, the elevatinglever having at its front end a concaved plate secured on top the lever by the screw-threaded shank and nut, for purposes specified.
2. The combination, with the base-socket comprising the bottom plate and vertical sides or flanges, of the standard having its lower end secured between the plates, and provided with a shoulder at each side, resting on top the sides, as set forth.
3. The combination of the base-socket comprising the bottom plate and vertical sides or flanges, and adapted to extend some distance both in front and in rear of the standard, the vertical standard resting between said sides and provided with the shoulders resting on the latter, and the transverse bolts and nuts for removably securing the standard to the sides, as set forth.
4. The combination-of the base-socket comprising a bottom plate and vertical sides or flanges, the vertical standard secured between the sides and having shoulders resting thereon, and a bifurcated top portion, forming extensions provided with notched edges, the lifting-lever having a fulcrum cross-pin and a slot at its rear end provided with a transverse pin, and its front end working over the top of the standard, and the supporting-rod the supporting-bar pivoted to the lower end of pivoted in a recess in the bottom of the standthe standard and having its edge notched, as
ard and provided with right-angular notches, set forth. I as set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 1 5. The combination of the base-socket havmy own I have hereto affixed my signature i ing sides or flanges, the vertical lever snpi presence of two witnesses.
