SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,956, dated May 28, 1895.
Application filed March 8, 1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeep- 7 a lifting jack for wagons and carriages of simp16 and economical constriiction and which while requiring a minimum amount of material will have the highest degree of strength necessary to durability and efficiency.

The lifting bar consists of two comparatively thin flat bars 1, 1, arranged with a space between them, their upper ends being connected through a space block 3, while their lower portions receive between them the links and lever hereinafter mentioned. The rear edges of the plates forming the bar are serrated to hold adj ustably the lifting foot 4 which extends between the parts of the bar and has a pin on its rear portion engaging the Abinding pin bears on the front side of the bar and thus the foot may be fixed at any height on the bar. A stop pin 9 limits the tilting or tipping movement of the foot. The bar is carried by a pair of links 4, 5, pivoted to the standard 6 at or near the rear edge thereof. The free ends of these links extend between the sides of the lifting bar and are pivoted thereto. The lifting lever 12 is also Serial No. 541,032. (No model.)
pivotally connected between the sides of the lifting bar and extends rearwardly and curving upward therefrom terminates in a suitable handle. This lever is fulcrumed on the upper end of a swinging link 7 the lower end of which is pivoted to the rear arm or extension of the lower carrying link. By reason of this arrangement, the lifting lever at its front end will exert its lifting power directly on the bar and the pressure of the lever on its fulcrum will also be transmitted to the bar as a lifting force through the swinging fulcrum link and the lower carrying link. The arrangement of the parts is also such that when the load is lifted and the lifting lever is down the fulcrum ,of the lever will be thrown below a line drawn between the pivot of the lever and the pivot of the swinging fulcrum link and the parts will thus be locked to hold the load raised.
The pair of carrying links, when the lifting bar is at half stroke, extend substantially horizontally, .and they move from this position equally when operated up or down. When the bar is down, the lifting lever is upright, extending close to the bar and forming a compact arrangement, and when the jack is operated to the full stroke, the lifting lever is in substantially horizontal position from the eral play. The upper and lower carrying links insure the vertical direction of the bars movement and maintain it securely against displacement toward the front or rear. These carrying links are themselves arranged, together with the lifting lever, in between the sides of the standards, and all of these parts are held against lateral displacement by the standard.

A lifting jack comprising a standard, a lifting lover, a lifting bar, a-swinging fulcrum link for the lifting leyer and a pair of links connected with theli'fting bar to maintain the same in vertical position, the said fulcrum link being connected with the lifting lever and with one of the pair of links the other link being independent of the lifting lever and connecting the lifting bar standard substantially as described;

A lifting jack comprising a standard, a lifting bar, a lifting lever pivotally connected therewith, a link pivoted to the upperfendof the standard and tothe lifting barja lower link pivoted to the lower part of the standard and to the lifting bar, a fulcrum link extending between'the'lifting lever andthe lower link, said lower link having a rear extension and the said lifting lever operating between the upper and lower links suhstantially asdjescribed.
