UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS S. MACK AND BEAUMARIS VOODVARD, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
HLDER FOR STEREOTYPE-PLATES..V
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,332, dated March 11, 1890.
Application filed May 13, 1889. Serial No. 310,543. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, LOUIS S. MACK, a citi- Zen of the United States, and BEAUMARIS VOODWARD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, both residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Stereotype-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement by which stereotype-plates are made readily removable from and replaceable upon their holders, and can besecurely locked when on the holders, as set forth in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stereotype plate and holder. Fig. 2 is a section along line oc oc, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional View showing a plate being sprung in place. Fig. 4 is a side elevat-ion of a modification. Fig. 5 is a section along line y y, Fig. 4:.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates a holder for electrotype-plates having parallel grooves B placed at a certain distance below its top. A stereotype-plate C is placed on the holder, and said plate has depending sides or lianges D, so that the lugs E will reach and engage the grooves B. The grooves B being parallel, the plate C is slideable on the holder and can be readily slipped off the holder, if desired. `In Fig. l the plate is shown partly slid off the holder. The depending sides or f flanges D will be engaged in the chase by the rules and furniture when the plate and holder are locked up for use, so that the plate will then be held iirmly on the holder. The plate C and sides or flanges D are made elastic, so that it is not necessary to slide a plat-e into place on the holder; but said plate can be readily and rapidly sprung over the holder and into place, as indicated in Fig. 3. The entire plate C and sides or iianges D can be made elastic, as seen in Fig. 3, or the plate C can be made rigid and only the sides or flanges D made elastic, as indicated in Fig. 5.
To secure elasticity of the plate or sides or flanges a suitable elastic material-such as celluloid or spring metal-is elnployed for making the plate or sides or flanges.
In order to have the outer faces of the sides or iianges D flush with the exposed portions F of the sides of the holder, the portions G of the sides of the holder against which the sides D sit are sunk or set back of the exposed portions F, as seen in Figs. @and 3.
A stereotype-plate has heretofore been provided with side ilanges to engage grooves of a base-block, and such, therefore, we do not broadly claim.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a holder or support A, having side grooves B,and a stereotype-plate C, having' laterally-elastic side flanges D, provided with inwardly projecting lngs E and capable of springing over the sides of the holder and retracting the lugs into the side grooves, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
