To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, Union county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in holders for rubber type such as are particularly designed and adapted for use as hand stamps, being provided with grooves or channels adapted to receive and retain interchangeable type which may thus be rearranged and varied at will, and the object of y the invention is to provide a device of this general character of a simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and of a compact and strong construction having an improved and simplified arrangement of the type receiving and retaining means.
The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, and combinations and arrangements of the several parts of the improved rubber type holder, wheretained, and the device is rendered simpler, cheaper and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully and defined in the claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference'to the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure l is a perspective view showing a rubber type holder constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is an underside plan view showing the frame member of the device; Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a preferred formation of the resilient type retaining member, detached from the frame member of the device; and Fig. 4 is an underside plan view of the device showing the preferred means for securing the members in relation.
In these views, 1 represents the frame member of the device, which is constructed from a rectangular piece of flat metal, of proper thickness and is provided at its opposite side portions with upwardly bent parallel flanges 6, 6 which project at angles from the underside of the frame member and between which the type retaining devices are adapted to be secured, as will be hereinafter explained.
As shown in these figures, the type retaining devices are constructed from a single piece or member 2 of thin sheet metal of proper strength and resilience, said member having integral upturned folds or flanges 4, 4, produced upon it and adapted to extend parallel with the flanged side portions 6, 6 of the frame member when the parts are in relation. The upturned folds or flanges 4, 4, of the type retaining member are arranged in pairs and are formed, as herein shown, by creasing the metal from which the member 2 is produced, in such a way that each of said flanges 4, 4 is formed from two plies or thicknesses of metal, which are connected by integral rounded portions or enlargements 5, 5 at the outermost lower edge portions of the flanges. The pairs of folds or flanges 4, 4 are spaced apart at suitable distances to produce elongated type receiving grooves or channels between each two adjacent pairs of said flanges, in which grooves or channels the rubber types are adapted to be removably held by the resilience of the material from which said member 2 is formed in such a way that the printing face of the types shall project beyond the lower edges of the flanges 4, 4 in printing posit1on.
The port-ions 3 of the type retaining member 2 which are "between the pair of folds or flanges 4, 4, and which form the bottoms of the type retaining grooves 0* channels are each integrally connected with one of the plies or folds of each pair, and said intermediate portions 8, 3 are extended in the same plane, so as to be adapted, when the type retaining member is inserted in the frame member 1, to fit flush upon the underside of said frame member between the edge flanges 6, 6, thereof. By reason of the integral rounded portions 5, 5 along the outermost edges of the flanges 4 it will be apparent that the grooves or channels between said flanges are given an undercut formation so that their bottoms are wider than their months or outer portions whereby, when the rubber types are inserted in the elongated grooves or channels, said types will be clamped between the enlargements 5, 5 and thereby securely held in position while being capable of ready removal whenever desired. The construction of said type retaining member 2 with the narrow rounded portions 5, 5 affording integral connection between and extended lengthwise along the outermost parts of the plies or thicknessesof metal which form each flange 4, permits of making said type retaining member from comparatively thin metal which could not be used for the purpose without undue liability of weakening said flanges were the metal plies or thicknesses comprised therein unconnected along their outermost parts. the improved construct-ion herein set forth, said rounded parts 5, 5 tie the juxtaposited plies or thicknesses together so that each flange is given the combined strength and stiffness of both the plies comprised therein, and being formed from comparatively thin metal, the connecting portions 5, 5 are permitted to be made very narrow so as to accommodate rubber types of the ordinary kinds. Vhere such comparatively thin metal is employed for the product-ion of the type retaining member, the employment of the flattened frame member 1 roduced from comparatively thick and stiff metal plate contacting upon the surfaces of the alined interi'nediate portions 3, 3 between the flanges 4, 4: of said type retaining member and opposite to the bottoms of the type grooves therein, insures the stiffness and rigidity requisite for the effective backing of the type contained in the type grooves and prevents bending of the thin metal type retaining member during use of the device in printing.
At opposite ends the frame member 1 is provided with integral spaced lugs or projections 7 7 which are produced by notching out the ends of the metal plate from which said frame member is formed at suitable intervals so as to leave the sa1d lugs or proj ections 7, 7 upon the ends of said metal plate, and said lugs or projections 7, 7 are adapted,
when the type retaining member 2 is in positlon between the edge flanges (5, 6 at the underside of the frame member, to be bent over beneath the underside of the type retaining member 2 so as to contact against the ends of the intermediate portions 3, 3 between the flanges 4t, 4 at the underside of the type retaining member in such a way as to securely hold said type retaining member upon the underside of the frame member.
This construction affords an extremely simple, strong and inexpensive attachment of the parts and leaves the bottoms of the type grooves of the type retaining member perfectly even and "smooth so as to pernnt of accurate contact upon the end surfaces of the types when the latter are inserted in the type retaining member.
From the above description it will be seen that the improved type holder constructed according to my invention is of an extremely simple and inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the simplicity, strength and durability of its construction and of the security with which the types are held in position in the grooves or channels and of the readiness with which they may be removed therefrom when desired, and it will also be obvious from the above description that the improved type holder is capable of some modification without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, for this reason I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise formation and arrangement of the several parts of the device as herein set forth in carrying out my invention in practice.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hand stamp having a. type retaining member formed of a comparatively thin metal plate provided with a plurality of upturned folds produced in it and arranged in pairs which are spaced apart .to produce between them a plurality of type retaining grooves, said thin metal plate having intermediate portions alined with each other to produce a flat surface at the side of the plate which is opposite to said upturned folds, sa1d intermediate portions affording integral connection between the several pairs of folds and forming the bottoms of the type retaining grooves, and the folds of each pair having narrow strengthening portions extended lengthwise along them and affording integral connection between their outermost parts, and a fiat frame member formed from comparatively rigid metal plate secured to the type retaining member and contacting upon the flat surface afforded by said alined intermediate portions at the side of the type retaining member opposite to said upturned folds and affording rigidity to said intermediate portions to prevent flexure thereof during use of the device in printing.
2. A hand stamp having a type retaining member provided with spaced elongated parallel flanges, and an intermediate portion affording integral connection between said flanges, the flanges forming the side walls, and the intermediate portion forming the bottom of an elongated groove adapted to receive a line of interchangeable printing types, and a frame member extended flush across the intermediate port-ion of the type retaining member, and having opposite edges provided with integral lugs which are bent across the edges of the type retaining member and folded flush upon the underreceive a line of interchangeable printing 1 types, said plate having intermediate portions affording integral connection between the several pairs of folds and forming the bottoms of the type receiving grooves the folds of each pair being integrally connected at their outermost parts, and a frame member extended flush across the intermedi ate portion of the type retaining member and having opposite edges provided with integral lugs which are bent across the edges of the type retaining member and folded flush upon the underside of the intermediate portions thereof at the opposite ends of said elongated type receiving grooves.
