No. 808,909. PATENTED JAN. 2, 1906.
J. s. DUNCAN & 0. N. TEVANDBR.
INDEX G'ARD.
APPLICATION FILED FEB-13.1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH S. DUNCAN AND OLOF N. TEVANDER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO ADDRESSOGRAPH COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
INDEX-CARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1906.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOSEPH S. DUNoAN and 01.0]? N. TEVANDER, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Index-Cards, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a detachable tab for cards of a card-index system adapted to form an index for the classification according to which the cards are arranged in trays or otherwise.
The invention is particularly useful in connection with the card index system covered by'the application of Joseph S. Duncan, filed February 11, 1905, Serial No. 245,262; but it can be used in other connections with equally satisfactory results.
In this application we employ the term card in its broad generic sense as comprising a common card, a printing device, or any other device which is capable of use in accordance with the ordinary card-index system, and in the accompanying drawings we have selected for the purposes of this description a card comprising a holder carrying a printing-plate and a record-strip.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of the card with the tab thereon. Fig. 2 is a back view of the card and tab. Fig. 3 is a detail enlarged front view of the tab. Fig. 4 is an end View of the tab. Fig. 5 is a sectional Viewon the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
The card illustrated in the drawings comprises a holder 11, carrying a printing-plate 12 and a paper or cardboard strip 13, which we prefer should bear an impression of the address on the printing-plate and any other information desired relating thereto. This plate and strip can be fastened to the card in any suitable manner, and in the construction illustrated the strip is located above the plate. We desire to have it understood at the outset that the invention can be used with cards of many other varieties than the one herein shown and described and with equally satisfactory results, and we do not intend to limit or restrict the application of our invention to this particular form of card. .The upper and lower edges of the holder are preferably turned over to form flanges 11 to assist in holding the plate and strip.
The card is provided with a projection 14, which in the form illustrated is cut and stamped out of the holder and bent up to extend above the upper edge of the holder. This projection may be utilized also to designate a series in the card-index system described in the above-mentioned application, or it may be provided simply for the purpose of sustaining the detachable tab, which is interlocked therewith. The tab 19 is cut out at 20 and provided with a top plate 21, having side flanges 22 and end flanges 22Fand forming a support for the index-strip 24. The tab also has a foot 25, and this foot is offset at 26, and the support 21 is offset at 27 so that the foot may enter the opening 28 in the holder 11 and the support 21 may slip down in front of the projection 14. The lower edge of the support 21 of the tab is adapted to rest on the upper edge of the holder, the offset 27 in the tab bringing the support forward sufflciently to permit it to slide down in front of the projection 14 and to a point below the opening 15 therein at the same time that the foot is entering the opening 28. The tab will ordinarily be held securely in place by reason of the engagement of the support with the projection and of the foot with the holder; but as a further precaution against accidental displacement Imay also provide a spring-lip 29, which is arranged to engage the top wall 30 of the opening 28 in the holder.
Detachable tabs, in accordance with this invention, can be easily and quickly shifted from one card to another, and they are particularly important in connection with cards which are utilized as printing devices as well as record devices, because they form a secure looking engagement with the card and are not liable to become displaced during the printing operation.
Without limiting ourselves to the exact construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, what we claim, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a card provided with a projection extending beyond one edge thereof, and a detachable index-tab for the card adapted to form an interlocking. engagement with said projection.
2. The combination of a card having an opening therein, a projection extending be- I yond an edge of the card, and a tab having a support and a foot, said foot being adapted to enter the opening in the card and said support being adapted to lie in front of the projection.
3. The combination of a card having an opening therein, a projection extending be yond an edge of the card, and a tab having a foot adapted to enter the opening in the card through the back thereof and an offset support adapted to lie in front of the projection.
4:. The combination of a card having an opening therein, a projection extending beyond an edge of the card, and a tab having an offset support and an offset foot, said foot said opening to lock the tab in place on the card.
6. The combination of acard having a projection thereon cut and stamped out of the card, said projection extending above the upper edge of the card, and a tab cut out to receive the projection and provided With a foot adapted to enter the opening in the card through the back thereof and a support adapted to lie in front of the projection and upon the upper edge of the card.
7. The combination of a card having an opening therein, a projection cut and stamped out of the card and extending above its upper edge, a tab cut out to receive the projection, an offset foot on the tab adapted to enter the opening in the card through the back thereof, and an offset support on the tab adapted to lie in front of the projection and above the upper edge of the card.
