Description

No. 823,062. PATENTED JUNE 1 ,1906.
L J. H. MATTHEWS. FORM FOR CYLINDER PRBssEs;
APPLIOATION FILED SEPT. 1. 1 905.
WITNESSES mainder of the composition and make part of this JAMES H. MATTHEWS,
or PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA,
FORM FOR CYLINDER-PRESSES.
To alt w/wm, it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, inthe county of'Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Cylinder Printing-Presses, of which the following is a-specification. My invention relates to improved forms for use in connection with cylinder printingpresses. These forms are arranged to receive and hold in place movable type by means of movable spacing-strips, and said strips and the ty e secured thereby are locked in place by the resiliency of the material of the forrn.- Novel means for accomplishing these ends in view are shown.
e object of my invention is to rovide a convenient form upon which the etters or type may be set up and held in place and in which substitutions of letters or types may be readily made without disturbing the rewhich may press and. in so as a unit be attached to the p the type :in
attaching automatically bin place to prevent displacement.
n the accompanying drawings, which application; Figural is an end view of my improved form. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a section albng the line 3 3 in Fig. 2. ig. 4 is a-.section along the line 4 4 in Fig.2, and Fig. 5 is a section along the line 5 5 in Fi 2.
he following is adetailed description of the drawings: '1 is the form-base, being a metal, preferably resilient and bent to conform with the curvature of the presscylinder to which it is to be attached. 2 is a metal strip attached transversely to said base and provided with an integral flange 6. Adjacent to the opposite end of said base are attached thereto a air of complementary beveled strips 7 7, f?) which are seated the blocks 8 8, every movable spacing-strip, as plained.
9 9 are holding plates or attached to blocks 8 8 by screws 10 10. It is evident that by driving in screws 10 10 the cleats 9 9 are readily fixed rigidly in any desired position.
1 11 represent parallel bindin -strips attached to the curved edges of ase 1 by means of screws 12 12, the blocks 13 13 serving to space said strips away from the base 1 to a block for will be excleats which are allow the flanges of Specification of Letters Patent. 3 Application filedSeptember l, 1905- 'Serial No. 276 718.

slip under the said strips. The are y longitudinally to provide movement for said strips when sprung'out-ofits norma curvathe type to slotted slig freedom of the baseis' 1414 representone or more movable strips strips is inserted in the I flange 6 of the strip 2. The ends of said strips 14 14 are upset or turned in to form a bearing surface which abuts against the strips 17 17, attached to-base 1. It is evl dent that the left-hand ends of said strips, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, are held in place by One end ofeac'h of said movable flange 6 and strip 17. The other. extremities" 15 15 of said strips 1414 are pressed into place to bear against the corresponding strip 17. A spacing-block 8 is now moved alon until its cleat 9 rests upon the end 15 of the stri 14. The strips are thus placed in their desired locations, and the form is ready for setting the type.
The t e or letters 18, 18 have curved impression f dces to corres 0nd to the arc of the cylinder of the press and are provided at their bases with lateral flanges 19 19 to enter under the stationary strips 11 11 or movable stri s ,14 14, which are heldfrom contact witli the base of the form by the interposition of the strips 17 17, as shown. 7 When the desired type have been placed between the strips in the arrangement re uired, the movable strips are shifted until 1; e type are held snugly between them and the strips 11 11, as t e case may be. The screws tightened and the cleats 9 until the strips 14.14 are held against slipping. Previous to assembling the t e and adjustin the movable binding-strips the plate or ass 1 is flexed into a position such as shown in Fig. 1 in dotted lines by placing said base-plate on a block or rest known as a spreader-block. en the'type are assembled and the stri s 14 14 properly adjusted, the spreader-block is removed, and the base 1 springs back into its normallycurved form, thus binding the t eand bindposition. .t is evident that the type'cannot escape from the form sprung into its normal curvature.
Many variations of the means shown for securing the ends of the strips 14 14 previous to allowing the plate 1 to sprin normal curvature will present themselves to press or at any time when 10 10 are now 9 forced down back to its l templates one skilled in the art; but my invention conany means convenient for that purpose and is not limited to the exact construction shown.
What I. claim as novel is 1.' In a form for cylinder printing-presses,
the combination of a curved base-plate of spring metal, type having flanges on their bases, fixed edges on said base-plate adapted to enga e said flanges, adjustable spacingstrips a a ted to engage said flan es and to aline and ock said type when said ase-platc is bent out of its normal shape and means when said base-plate springs back into its normal shape for securing the ends of said spacing-strips.
2. In a form for cylinder printing-presses, the combination with a curved base-plate of spring-metal and flanged type,,of movable locking-strips adapted to secure said type 1n place when said base-plate is bent out of its normal hlape and means for securing the ends of said strips. 3. In a device 0 combination with flanged type, of a curve resilient plate having fixed edge strips adapted to engage one flange of said type, lockingstrips to aline when tension is applied by the resiliency of said late, means for retaining the ends of 30 said ockin -strips and auxiliary means for f the class described, the l and lock said type in place locking sai strips before said tension is applied.
4:. In a form for cylinder printing-presses,
a curved base-plate, an adjustable spacing- 3 5 strip, a flanged strip fixed to said base-plate and adapted to engage one end of said spacingstrip, the end of said spacing-strip in said engagement, a pair of complementary beveled strips 0 fixed to the opposite end strip fined to said base-plate parallel with said complementary strips and a second fixed strip adapted to hold of said base-plate, a
means 031'- ried by said complementary strips for clampng the other end of said adjustable strip 5 against said last-mentioned fixed strip, substantially as described In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
