GEORGE GEBHARDT, 33., 0F NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
COUNTER BLOCK FOR EMBGSSING JPRESSES.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE GEBHARDT, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the countyof Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Counter Blocks for Embossing Presses, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements in embossing presses and more particularly to an improvement inthe construction of the counter block and counter which supports the male die.
The usual practice in making ready for the operation of an embossing press is to prepare the female die in the usual manner and then, after preparing the counter or male die, to secure the counter by glue or other similar means to the face of the counter block or counter block slide. Then after the required number of impressions have been made the female die is preserved for future .use in the event a reprint is required, but the male die is destroyed at the time it is removed from the face of the counter block or counter block slide. As the preparation of the male die or counter requires considerable time and labor, a corresponding amount of'time and labor must be lost in the event a reprint is ordered. It is, therefore, the primary object of the present invention to provide means whereby the male counter or die may be mounted upon the counter block or counter block slide in a manner to permit of its removal therefrom without destruction or mutilation and so that it may be preserved in the same manner as the female die,
for future use. In this manner the expense which would otherwise be involved through the'labor of an embossing pressman in 're preparing the male die, as well as the time lost while the embossing press remains idle, is saved.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is an inverted perspective view of the devicev embodying the present invention; F 1
Figure 2 is a vertical front to rear sectional view through the device;
Figure 3 is an inverted perspective view ofthe counter block slide removed from the counter block; v
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the counter block slide.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates in general the counter block, which is pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

vided with the usual shank 2 whereby it may be secured to the die plungerof an embossing press. The improvements embodying the invention may be adapted directly so to the block 1 or to a counter block slide as illustrated in the drawings, this slide being indicated in general by the numeral 3 and comprising a plate 4 having its end edges beveled as indicated by the numeral 5 5 a locking plate 9 which overlaps the said forward edge of the slide 3.
the face of the 7 and by a binding screw 8 I into the said face of the block and may be tightened to clamp in place The male counter or die is indicated in general by the numeral 10 and the same comprises a rectangular sheet 11 of card-board.
upon the face of which the die proper, ina dicated by the numeral 12 is built up in the usual manner. As stated'above, the counter board or die 10 in a similar manner directly to the face of the counter block 1 or to the face of the counter block slide 3 and, after the required number of impressions have been made, is
removed therefrom removal is mutilated or'destroyed. Inasmuch as the present invention however contemplates such removal without mutilation or destruction, means is provided for hold- 1ng the counter board or die 10 assembled 95 with the slide 3 in a instant separation required. With this end in view the invention contemplates the provision along the rear edge and both end edges of the face the slide 3, of retaining members designed manner to permit of its to marginally engage the counter board or die 10 and The flange the counter numeral 13 and the flanges at the end edges thereof are indicated by the numeral 14 and each of these flanges comprises a strip 15 of metal having one edge rabbeted as at 16 thus serve the purpose stated. at the rear edge of the face of to provide a groovel'? and an over-hanging 1'10 lip 18 toreceive and engage the rear and end edges of the sheet 11 of the counter and replacement when is usually glued or secured 5 and in the'course of block slide is indicated by the board. Thus when the board has been prepared in the usual manner, it is slid into engagement with the flanges l3 and 14, and after the required number of impressions have been made, the counter board may be readily slid from engagement with the slide 3 without mutilation or destruction and filed away for future use. It will be understood that thestrips 15 comprising the flanges 13 and 14 may be made integral with the face of the slide 3 or secured to the face of this slide in any suitable manner, as for example by screws 19 fitted through the upper side of the slide and threaded at their lo'werends into openings formed at suitable intervals in said strips. It will be also understood that if desired the slide 3 may be-dispens'ed with and the strips 15 may be arranged in a similar manner upon the face of the counter block 1. v v
It will be understood that instead of the strips 15, any-other suitable means may be posed against the face of the counter bloc-k slide, and means removably securing the sheet in place.
2. In a device of the class described, in
combination, a male c ounter comprising a sheet of cardboard or its equivalent and a die portion built up upon the face thereof, a counter block slide against the face of which the said sheet is disposed, and means carried by the said slide removably retaining the said 'counter sheet.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
