Abstract

838,040. Sewing machines. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO. June 20, 1958 [July 3, 1957], No. 19747/58. Class 112. A sewing machine comprises a reciprocable needle bar carrying at least one needle, a threaded looper, and a member movable in co-ordination with and parallel to the needle bar for co-operation with the looper thread to hold the looped end of the latter away from the needle. As shown, the machine is a modification of the machine described in Specification 709,531. The needle clamp 16 on the needle bar 15 carries, in addition to the four needles 17, a needle-like member 26 adapted to enter the looped end 31a of the thread loop 31 inserted by the looper 20 through the needle thread loops 30a to 30d. End 31a is finally released by the ascending retainer member 26 to provide a slight extra amount of looper thread to be incorporated in the stitch. It is stated that this insures more uniform stitch formation and a smoother seam. A small plate 25, secured to the upper surface of the throat plate 24, carries three stitch fingers which project across an opening in the throat plate to provide separate apertures for the passage of the needles. A separate opening 28 is provided for the passage of member 26.
