Abstract
837,391. Diffusion pumps. NEW YORK AIR BRAKE CO. Nov. 14, 1958 [Nov. 22, 1957], No. 36666/58. Class 71. A diffusion pump comprises a cooled outer casing 11, Fig. 1, spaced from a chimney 15 provided with a series of circumferential spaced jet openings 16, 17 and 18. Each jet opening has an associated nozzle 23 for directing the vapour from the chimney to the space between the chimney and casing and radial baffles 25 are provided extending from the casing into the spaces between adjacent nozzles 23. The baffles 25 are in heat-conducting relationship with the casing and preferably extends from the pump inlet 12 to the outlet 13 which is connected with a fore pump, The baffles 25 may be of thin sheet metal but are preferably of prismatic shape having their longitudinal sides parallel to the side of the adjacent nozzle, Fig. 5 shows the invention applied to a conventional ejector pump having an inlet 38, an outlet 39 and a cooled Venturi section 41. The vapour jet issues through nozzles 45 similar to the nozzles 23 above and the Venturi section 41 is provided with radial baffles 46.
